Have you ever wondered what Chinese consumers might be buying from their version of AliExpress? We didn’t, at least not initially, but when we saw the specs and price of this Frankenstein gaming PC listed all over Taobao, our tune changed completely. What’s going on inside this $300 14-core xeon beast of a computer? Who makes these parts? Why is it so cheap? And why is hwinfo64 telling us that this motherboard has specs that straight up shouldn’t exist?

When we fantasy-built our own workstation equivalent to the Taobao gamer special, here’s what we came up with:

Build 1:
– HP Z440 ($130) + $39 shipping within US
– Updated version of the PC we used for the latest $69 PC
– Add on E5-2690 V4 $22.22
– Add on 2070 Super for $150
– Includes 700W power supply
– Uses 2133 RAM, same as the Taobao
– Has Front USB 3 x4
– RAM and SSD were included in a few of the listings we found

Build 2:
– Dell Precision T5810 ($67) + $35 shipping within US
– Add on E5-2698 V3 $24.99
– Only does E5 V3 processors
– 2698V3 is only slightly slower than 2690V4 at CPU mark
– Includes 825W PSU
– Has Front USB 3 x1 USB 2 x3
– Uses 2133 RAM, same as the Taobao
– 16gb ram included in the model we found on ebay
– Add on a 240gb Kingston A400 for $25
– Add on an RTX 3070 OC for $200 + $15 shipping on ebay

  • Well, in Russia (atleast, like, couple of years ago) Xeon enthusiasts were so all over the place, it was almost sickening.
There was, atleast one, basically a war between couple of youtubers, one was saying something like "xeons are best, buy them with my totally not affiliated link below" and other was saying something along the lines of "amd chips are better, even though they might require some tinkering".
I dont remember where it all went but hey, its still a thing, for like 50$ to get somewhat capable xeon paired with memory and mobo, still sounds good, isnt it?

  • This computer isn't just running "a cracked version of Windows 10 Enterprise", it's running Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC (it can be seen at around 10:00). It's a version of Windows without any Microsoft bloatware that isn't strictly necessary for the computer to run, and it's meant for servers. LTSC stands for Long Term Support Channel, and the support window is 10 years! So this computer will get updates up to at least 2026, assuming that Windows 10 came out in 2016.

  • some additional information from a Chinese friend here
Typically Taobao is more like a giant grocery store, we would not prefer to buy any electronic gadgets from it (not for any tech enthusiast) unless it is a store opened by a very famous influencer. (like LTT, it's not common for influencers in China to set up a website just for spelling merchants)
There is another platform called Jindong we use to buy tech stuff, and big companies' official store is often set up in JD as well (eg. intel, Asus, gigabytes, Ugreen, Seagate, western digital, and so on)
And we prefer to build our computers than buy an already built system like this because there are lots of sellers who use almost broken parts to build systems and sell them at a high price for profit (like this time) once a customer gets tricked they quickly close their store change a name and start selling again
and this happens on all platforms
I'm not sure if you are tricked or not this time
That old Xeon CPU in China is called garbage(costs around 60~70 bucks each, which is around 10 dollars) because it's most likely to be used in rough conditions, and also GPU probably came from a mining farm
it's not just used parts, it's a bomb that will explode at any second

  • the case looks better than the Antec case it seems to have copied, Dark Avenger (DA601) that I currently own.

I had to remove the front because i wasn't getting enough airflow.

  • 之前還有一個10美元左右的😅雖然我都叫他炸彈

  • My dad has that exact same screw driver in his motorcycle that he got in 2003 and he uses it still to this day

please, don't insult all other post soviet countries that are also part of this community. we are not russian. same way that you are not british even if you speak the same language. you can even see at 15:04 that there is ukrainian currency mentioned in the forum post. Ukraine is not russian. we are literally being killed and you still call the community "russian"

tldr: "russian speaking" – ok. "russian COMMUNITY" – hell no

  • As a Chinese audience, one thing I really dislike about Linus is that when he mentions Chinese electronic products or makes reviews, he will buy loads of products on Chinese websites that even the Chinese themselves think are low-end, in order to conform to the most stereotypes about China. The fact is that China, like many countries, is keen on high-quality and excellent products. These low-end products only exist to allow more low-budget customers to buy them. The fact is that quality products can be purchased in China, and even better priced products

  • Pre-pandemic, at least 50% of my company was on desktops. A year or two before, it would have been closer to 80%. As of this year, I don't know that I've seen even one. Unfortunately, the days of buying used office desktops is probably passing quickly. Furthermore, 10 years ago or so, work laptops were much more serviceable. Today, they are generally junk and not worth updating by the time we replace them.

  • Actually, if you build these stuff yourself, you just need $200. But you can't get that screwdriver🤣

  • this video is great. Vellygood job everyone! lmao

  • It's been like 2 years I've been playing on a Xeon E5 1660 V4 (gift) and a Huananzhi X99 motherboard and tbh ? I have no issue at all, yeah not W11 compatible and i can't put my computer to sleep (it shuts down) but for stock frequencies onnthe CPU, slight OC on the GPU, wifi card (hit or miss on that side though, but i use VR so ethernet cable required), normal NVME storage and sub 2080 GPUs it's damn perfect.

Doesn't support 256GB of ram somehow (octo ? Channel) so i have 128 in quad, but it well over what i need for VR lol. So yeah i love those custom boards :3

  • You can get a used gaming pc with a 1080ti for 3-400 gbp.

  • Even charged with high international shipping fees, there are still many goodies in Taobao offering unmatched price in the US market. Recently I been looking for a HDMI 2.1 capable KVM and everything from Amazon is over $100 all the way up to several hundred. However in Taobao you can easily find deals below $40 that is actually superior than the $200 counterparts at Amazon. Same things goes for many other PC parts as well…

  • I think its okay that they're reusing clearly still good items in new products.

  • What the hell, I have the exact same rocket ship arrow keys on a cheap-ass keyboard I have on a secondary computer. They're black instead of white, though, and nothing else on the keyboard looks the same.

  • I have two Machinist mobos. One has a 22 core xeon with ddr3 as a home server running proxmox. The other is the fastest 16 core xeon with ddr4. It replaced the 6600 in my desktop (while using the original memory with 2 additional sticks). I've run some of the benchmark that Linus uses and have matched a number of them to his AM5 Ryzens and an Intel. I'm not sure how it is able to keep up. Maybe I'm not doing the benchmark right. Anyway, it does a lot of blender and the pcie is a bottle neck to the 3070TI, but at <$200 USD, it has proven a decent upgrade. It will eventually get replaced by a Ryzen when rent goes down

  • is there anybody can tell me what's the meaning of the rap- "On the streets late at night, cause I'm small." I am learning English.

  • Spend $300, reformat it and install normal Windows and have a serviceable PC for a few years? I've seen worse deals.
