I tried coding on my iPad for 7 days

Using an iPad as my primary device for coding wasn’t something I thought possible until I tried it. There are a number of different ways you can use a tablet as a software development device, including things like coding apps and remote desktop.

Since I have a computer, laptop and tablet for website development, I found coding and swapping devices sort of difficult especially with the fact that most environments require me to sync github in order to get back to coding my so important HTML, CSS and JS.

So picking one device to use only, the iPad meant I tried to test out different methods for programming, and I enjoyed remote desktop the most. I technically could use a single environment with all the benefits of a super computer, but on an iPad. I used JumpDesktop to do this as teamviewer wasn’t as effective.

  • i learned to code using a Surface Pro 7. So for like a year and a half, all I knew was small screens. it got the job done.

  • Bro my ipad air2 is lock i need my activation email id but i don't remember the email can you please help me to unlock.

  • No. Only way is with a decent terminal app (such as Blink) and ssh/mosh into your home or cloud instance with vim + LSP

  • The problem of using phones and tablets to program is that it's hard to find a good IDE, the archive system in android is trash compared to pc and rarely we can do GUI programs, Android system architecture isn't good for multi platform development, if the phone had a windows or Linux virtual machine then it could work

  • Can somebody tell me if there are any for a Samsung a7?

  • This will def be helped when rhey reads sideloading

  • LOL for a moment I thought you were going to write code on the ipad… Not that you would use it as terminal. You can get a serial port equipped VT100 and get the same basically if all you want is remote on another machine 😉

Seriously; if you want to "code" on an iPad, you want to be OFFLINE first of all. Not sure how old are you or where do you live, but most of the planet does NOT have internet high speed to do VNC or RDC or anything remotely related to that; but most places do not even have connectivity like 56K bandwidth… Especially rural areas.
So it is cool that you can do these things remotely, but you bought a 1K dollars device to use it as remote terminal, and that defy the whole purpose of having a powerful device on the go with a portable keyboard.

I get that today everyone is a "programmer" as you write for web; but what you write has to run somewhere, and that backend require C, C++ and Java to run; which you cannot write on a web based interface if there is no connectivity.

  • I’m just starting to learn to code and all i have is an iPad, with a keyboard aswell.. is it possible to learn normally? What am i missing out on?

  • Ipads (Pros mainly) are awesome for Hipster/ Youtube creative work… but heavy coding/debug/deploy workflows are a NO GO. Android tablets also lacks support for a real local developer workflow too, so real computers for me, as of now.

  • It looks like a massssssive compromise to me you would be better with a laptop , but I suppose it made this weeks video. 😊

  • Dude, ipad is ipad and laptop is laptop..ipad is only for media and note taking.. get both or based on your priority

  • Completely lost me when you plugged in a monitor 💀

  • If you’re using an iPad for work, get a keyboard case. It’s so essential, and it makes life easier. Even as a student, I find it very useful. Also consider the Apple Pencil 2.

  • Just buy a laptop with i7/i5 13 generation processor. Don't do sh** like these.

"You need a tractor to plow your field, not a drilling machine."

  • Imagine getting a blue screen while hes at work.

  • Jump Desktop is great, but doesn’t have Webcam Redirection yet, so you can’t do proctored coding challenges or other web-cam required applications.

  • ..how these things simplify n value our time…imagine michelangelo with 1 of these ..those days …

  • Not everyone has fancy equipment like you do nor everyone is a pro developer like you, with that said, if you want to do simple machine learning tasks, data wrangling and visualisation in college and don't want to bring your gaming beast laptop with you, can you do that ?????

  • I got an iPad Mini, cuz budget reasons. But is coding worth it? Is there some app I can use to do coding?

  • "I tried coding on my iPad for 7 days" >> "I stream my pc to my ipad for 7 days"

  • Oh you just said I can run VS code on the iPad, so that is very good. I want to work with WordPress can I use my iPad Pro to build WordPress sites

    Turn off

  • What if you don’t have a desktop brah. I need to call just on my iPad Pro series six and can I do it?

  • Stop giving Apple props. Simply put iPad suck.

  • What is your experience because i though to buying a tab but my family is tell to buy a phone i am confuse so asking you whats i buy for typing in coding please tell me

  • 7 Minute video of not actually doing what you said in the title. Glad I only watched for 20 seconds.
