Incredible Budget Home Server! (Minecraft, Plex, Home Assistant, NAS)
UPDATES/CORRECTIONS:
– I apologize if you came to this video expecting a computer that was readily available for $50. I wasn’t trying to be misleading, and I’m hoping to get better at making titles and thumbnails.
– The Minecraft server portion of this will probably not run very well on older or low end hardware. I’m currently working on a video to run a much more optimized server on old hardware.
– If you don’t know an available IP address, find the IP of your router and login. From there you can find the DHCP settings. You can probably find your server by name here. If you save or reserve that IP in your router settings, it won’t change.
– It seems like there are some changes to newer versions of Ubuntu Server, so try using the same version I used in the video. I’ll try to find time to look into common issues/fixes.
In this one, we’re once again taking a look at the HP Pavilion 500-a60, but now we’re setting it up as a home server.

Nice, video. I do think it's important to note that this setup comes with limitations.
– Things like transcoding are going to be limited to 1 client and I'm be cusrious if it can even transcode a high bitrate 4k stream.
– Very limited amount of SATA ports
– Power usage (a rPI4 or other low power device might be the better option)
– Power limitation, adding more disks will require a power upgrade
– Disk life, This case was never made to be running multiple disks at the same time. So once you start adding disks you'll run into issues with them dying quickly
– Reliability, for fun it's perfect. However, do not leave any important data on it!
– You say nothing of backup, which is the most important thing
How do you know what drive letter to chose?
Can you access to stuff from outside of your home (externally)? Probably not. But in that case, can I allow it on the firewall to go out and then be able to connect externally or do I need a domain address for that?
Man excellent video. Just what I was looking for trying to delve into this area. Couple of stupid questions.
1. What kinda of models should I look for in marketplace? I would imagine low power draw would be essential so how do I scout this out
2. Why Ubuntu vs Windows?
not actually having 2nd pc, but have 2nd mobile
installed zerotier for non ethernet connection
everything setted up (sshd, samba)
currently trying to host some basic apps (like libretranslate)
ty for some info!
Slap that SSD back in and run your game servers on it for optimal load times. Trust me, I've got a Valheim server running in my living room, SSD is the way!
Hi. I am interested in your video. I would like to ask you how i can make/earn money with a home server
I can't get to samba and I did exactly what you did. I also enabled every feature for SMB1.0 but nothing work
I have windows 10 home 22h2
town groove 🔥🔥
Minecraft servers are nightmare enough to properly configure, there's no way I am going to try and do that on linux, I couldn't even get the gui ubuntu useably configured which felt like it was built to waste your time.
when i do the flash drive thing it just open the windows normally
now i tried to delete my windows 7 but nothing seem to work please help
Struggling pretty hard to get my folder to appear in Plex. I've been trying to mount the drive for hours
What would you recommend for backups? I have almost the exact same setup running without home assistance and plex
This is my first time messing with anything like this, however, changing the ip address made ssh not work for me. When i leave it on auto and use that ip address it works fine. Hopefully this helps anyone having the same issue. I'm not sure if there are any security risks by using the automatic ip address.
Very new to this server thing. Should I use docker to install evey services I'm going to add like you did on home assistant? What are the pros and cons as I'm trying to have this same setup. Thank you very much.
I love videos for this kinda thing but why'd you leave in the optical drive instead of using that sata port and power for the ssd or a second drive for backup? because Id rather just but a mini pc or usff if i only had one drive still this is a cool and helpful video and i hope you keep making videos like this
what if i wanna use add ons on home assistand in this case?
I've got my old highschool laptop I've loaded with Ubuntu Server. It runs my friend group's Minecraft server.
Wow
very gzd thx
Is there a way i can make a game server using an actual server
