Install Visual Studio Code on Ubuntu 24.04
Visual Studio Code is the most popular free text editor used for software development today. It is a freeware (not open source) offering from Microsoft available on all major operating systems.
In this video we install VS Code on the newly released Ubuntu 24.04. We use the Debian (.deb) package and aptitude to install it. You can also use snap on Ubuntu. We used that method in a 2021 video where we installed VS Code on Ubuntu 20.04.
We take a look at some of the documentation, including a series of introductory videos that help you get started. After installing we launch the editor, open a folder, install some extensions, and modify settings and preferences.
This video covers:
00:00:00 Introduction
00:01:19 Discuss 2021 video and note that we will use apt instead of snap for this video
00:01:40 Download the Debian package and kick off install in terminal using apt
00:02:37 Take a look at the repo we will open in VS Code after it installs
00:03:09 Launch Visual Studio Code, open a folder, review the Getting Started page
00:05:08 Install some extensions for a few languages
00:06:49 Make some changes to preferences and settings
00:09:01 Close and re-launch after installing extensions, show the integrated terminal
