Installation and First Look of Fedora 39

The latest release of Fedora, version 39, was just released. I’m going to do a quick installation and first look of Fedora 39 inside a virtual machine, including looking at GNOME 45 as well as the experimental ‘dfn5’ package manager.

  • Just a head up, the remove user data feature doesn't always work. I'm not sure how I feel about a tool that makes you think your user data has been deleted when it hasn't.

  • I installed fedora 39 into Parallels on my mac, installation went fine. I tried to install brave from the terminal using the lengthy method and also from the app installer. Neither of them worked, so I may throw this away. Not sure if this was a Parallels problem or fedora problem. I don't really need it anyway, just fooling around with Parallels.
Next I installed Ubuntu which ran much faster but brave beta installation also failed to run.

  • You got your password wrong at 12:13. Have you considered using a less complicated one, just for demos?

  • Zypper is only slow for americans due to the mirrors. In the EU zypper works fantastic. Just outcomment deltarpm option

  • Nice review as usual. I wouldn’t mind finding a review of current Fedora steam and gaming.

  • Uninstalling the GNOME Software Center (that's how I run my system always) brings the RAM usage down with an insane amount. Plus, there is no downside of sudo dnf remove gnome-software, no dependency risk. Also, fine tuning systemd services is a good idea. It's a bloated mess.

  • I think DT should create his own distrotubition.

  • I'm honestly confused. I have tried to install several Fedora version's on my PC, which runs Win 10, Manjaro KDE and Ubuntu flavors like Mint, Kubuntu.
Fedora is refusing to run on my PC and I can't figure out why.
I used Etcher and Fedora Media Creation Tool for creating a bootable USB Stick.
After the installation started, I get several error messages and the install is blocking.
My PC is a 12 year old fellow with an first generation I7x.
I have searched the web for help, but couldn't find a solution for this.
    Any ideas for here?

  • Installed it couple of days ago. Will try dnf5. I did changed dnf for parallel download.

  • I am seething with anger at what the Gnome developers have done. It is no longer possible to quickly see the name of any particular app in use.

  • Fedora branding on desktop is actually an extension 🙂

  • Hallo, am a newish Linux user. Curious, if I was to install Fedora 39 to my local desktop. What are the minimum RAM requirements to run for a smooth experience?
That dnf5 upgrade had an immediate impact. Great video, 👏👏

  • My keyboard has adjustable backlighting functionality, but i don't have a controller in the right drop-down system menu as well.
Is this a Fedora-specific option? And if not, what is the name of the application responsible for it?
I am using Gnome, from the rolling ALT Linux distribution, because it provides a very vanilla experience overall. Arguably even more vanilla Gnome than on Debian.

  • So far I used SuSE, but now I changed to Fedora (from 36). So I'll be back to Red Hat soon. Kidding. You're right, zypprer and dnf are the slowest package managers. DNF5 made an impression, but how many "years" will pass before it is fully functional ;(
By the way, I have a question (Maybe to Hey DT). why Android is not counted as a Linux distribution. It's Linux after all. It runs on so many different devices, phones, tablets, TV boxes, even cars, probably refrigerators and washing machines too. This is a bit of a stupid question, but it might be interesting.

  • About the RAM usage: Fedora has a LOT of systemd services running which may not be needed for simple home use. Disabling (or better, masking) the unneeded services brings the RAM usage back a fair bit.

  • Comparing dnf to apt, excuse me? Apt is unusable garbage, dnf is light years ahead. And I do not understand what is the point of package manager being fast (assuming that dnf is actually slower, which i doubt that is significantly).

  • Bro, you don't have to click it again, just don't click it at all. I know, it's a little counter-intuitive, though.

  • I haven't watched it yet, but here's a pro tip: change the resolution by right-clicking on the desktop and select 'Display Settings'. Now I will see how DT does it.

  • Yep, I made a video on Fedoras Anaconda installer, especially the unintuitive disc selection 😂

  • Can't say if it's the best release so far, the complete revamp of extension codebase is a little annoying. I can't prevent double empty workspace when nothing is open because the MIN_NUMBER_WORKSPACES is changed from a variable to a constant! Oh! How will I ever recover from this loss?

  • Fun fact about the English US keyboard. It is the default more places than just the US. That is the same one I have to pick up in Canada.

  • They removed the app icon from the left corner of the system tray. I'm speechless. How te h*ck am I supposed to know which app I'm using now?

  • … for me, gnome is ugly. can't help it, I really can't stand either its default look (that can't be customized) and its functionalities.

  • Barely anything note worthy enough about this release to even make a full video about it.

  • Here's something weird — Canonical have pushed out Ubuntu 23.10.1. IIRC, this is the first time Canonical have issued a point release for a non-LTS version of Ubuntu.

  • GNOME is still bloated as H-E-double-hockey-sticks in F39 though. So Canonical must have done something right to mitigate that with Ubuntu 23.10.

  • I have yet to find a good calendar in Linux. One that allows you set an appointment that repeats fortnightly or every X days.
All we get is the standard presets. Back in the days of pocket pcs you could set appointments freely. Everyone just copies each other's stuff and nobody innovates. But bring on the flashy graphics and animations…

  • My install of fedora 39 with gnome runs on abut 1g or fam at idle.

  • Awesome vid! I just saw on distrowatch the other day that a new Fedora is out and was contemplating about trying it. Thanks for your vid mate!

  • fedora dnf package manager is much faster than apt ot dpkg , even zypper is also faster some cases than apt.
pacman is fastest of all ?
