Installing GPU and Ubuntu Linux on QNAP TS-464 NAS

This is not your standard QNAP NAS review! I’m going to be installing a GPU and Ubuntu linux on the TS-464 just to see if we can convert a nas into a Desktop PC. Thanks for the view!

  • Thanks a lot for having shown the BIOS & tested the installation of an alternative OS (especially Linux)!!!
I used for my backup-NAS so far a very old "HP ProLiant MicroServer" with an "AMD Turion N40L" (2013) but that CPU is very weak, especially in combination with ZFS.
I was looking for some compact HW that would still allow me to run my own OS => QNAP systems looked attractive.
I ordered a TS-464 today, I'll edit this post depending on the result.
    Cheers 😁

  • Sorry to post on an old video, but do you know how to tell if this unit comes without soldered memory? I see yours has slots, but some reviews came with soldered memory. Or do all recent ones come with slots?

  • Hi i just put 32GB of ram cause why not 🙂 I works aweome but i got fotos but cant send them here. Greetings from Poland.

  • To do this because you can, is cool and all, but when the iGPU is a million times better than the n1030, when it comes down to encoding 4K Video into 1080p transcoded Streams for non 4k displays, whats the point? Sadly I doubt we could shove a n1050 up there. As if we could then that just might tip the scales, when transcoding video.

  • Can you fit a pcie X8 card in there? I just got this NAS and I was wondering if a double SFP+ going to fit in there. I know 2 lanes are working in there.

  • Hi! May I know how do you tell if you got the N5105 or the N5095 without booting the NAS? Thanks!

  • It is e very expensive solution. This 4 bay nas cost a lot.

  • Medicat, that one is pretty nice, its just a little bit large

  • Yeah, there is such a thing as a PSU not supplying enough power!
Y'know, I know you're in a real big hurry to do this, and maybe it goes against your normal procedures…. But some of us don't want to watch you figure out things in "real time!" Why not figure out if something is gonna work (that means TRY IT, NOT ON VIDEO), and THEN make your video!
I know you're thinking, "Well gee, then I have to do things twice, which is a waste of MY time!"
But at least you're not wasting everyone else's time!
But, there is another way around it… It's called EDITING! Ever hear of it?! Then you only have to cut out the stuff where you're wasting OUR time. There is another benefit: a shorter, but much cleaner & more professional video!
True, your do have to take a little more time to edit, it requires just a bit more time than simply chopping outs bit here & there. But the results are worth it.
Yes, I know… you think your time is just so much more valuable than everyone else's, but I assure you, it's not. (Could be my time is more valuable than yours, but I won't go there.) I'll just say, why not simply RESPECT your viewers' time?
Just as an all-around philosophy, respecting others is not a bad way to go. It'll make you more supporters and even friends (those are those ppl that actually care about you, that's different from the dweeb hangers-on who just want to be there, hoping you'll acknowledge their existence, because they have no other reason for existing… Sorry, I know I just lost you.) Let's just go with, "Most ppl will appreciate it if you respect their time."
I know, that's not enough for you to even stop to think about it. After all, everything has been going so well for you so far! Oh, well. At least I tried. Sorry for the time anyone wasted on my rant.

  • lol 750ti is the graphics card I use on my main pc, haven't had the money to afford a new one!

  • It would be interesting to see TrueNAS Scale on one of these things!
