Instant DNS: Hosts File

If you need a DNS name to work immediately on your local Linux machine, you can add an entry to the /etc/hosts file. It’s helpful for things like:

* Setting up a virtual host without waiting for DNS to propagate
* Blocking ads by putting fake entries for known ad company addresses
* Playing pranks on your office mates!

This actually works in Linux, OSX, and even Windows! (Although you’ll have to figure out where exactly the file lives depending on your version of windows)
