IP Addresses Subnet Masks

The combination of IP address and a subnet mask can tell you several things about a network including the network address, the number of hosts and the range of IP addresses that can connect to the network, as well as the broadcast address for the network. The subnet mask splits an IP address into the network part and the host part by the simple process of ANDing the two 32 bit numbers together
