IP and open source: can we get along? – Hana Oh
Once thought of as opposite ends of the spectrum, open source and IP protection have both evolved and are now leading to interesting interrelated issues. In this talk, we will explore some of these developments, with concrete takeaways about what everyone developing or contributing to Nextcloud should be aware of on this topic. This will be based on recent legal developments and cases involving open source models.

Hana Oh
Hana Oh, Ph.D., is an MIT-trained engineer-turned-attorney in O’Melveny’s Intellectual Property and Technology practice group. Hana focuses on patent and trade secret litigation and licensing issues for innovative companies, including Samsung, Micron, Belkin, Alcon, and Novartis. Clients entrust her to navigate complex scientific and technical issues arising in intellectual property disputes. Hana has also skillfully managed teams, experts, and co-counsel through many phases of litigation, from pre-filing investigation, pleadings, complex discovery, and motion practice to settlement negotiations and pre-trial filings. She is fluent in Korean, and serves as an effective advisor to Korean clients regarding litigation in the U.S. and licensing issues. In her pre-law life, Hana designed microfluidic devices to study cellular mechanics, using both mathematical modeling and experimental approaches. She conducted postdoctoral research at a leading biotechnology company, and understands the importance of protecting a company’s valuable IP assets. She also prosecuted patents and developed portfolios in a wide range of technology industries. Her research and prosecution experience enables her to bring a critical and deep-probing approach to all litigation matters. An effective speaker who is particularly adept at discussing various IP issues tailored to attorneys and scientists, she has spoken at national scientific conferences and PLI (Practicing Law Institute).
