বিশ্বের প্রতিটি মানুষের নিজের পরিচয়ের জন্য একটা সুনির্দিষ্ট নাম আছে। এক নামে এক গ্রামে বা এক দেশে একাধিক লোক থাকতে পারেন কিন্তু প্রত্যেক মানুষের জন্য আলাদা আলাদা ঠিকানা থাকে। টেলিফোনের ক্ষেত্রে প্রতিটি ফোন সেটের জন্য যেমন একটি নম্বর আছে ঠিক তেমনি ইন্টারনেটের প্রতিটি কম্পিউটারের জন্য একটি আইডেন্টিটি থাকে যাকে আইপি এড্রেস বলে বা ইন্টারনেট প্রটোকল এড্রেস বলে।
ব্যবহারের দিক থেকে আইপি অ্যাড্রেসকে প্রধানত দুই ভাগে ভাগ করা যায়
১|পাবলিক আইপি অ্যাড্রেস
২|প্রাইভেট আইপি অ্যাড্রেস
আবার ভার্সনের দিক থেকে আইপি অ্যাড্রেস কে দুই ভাগে ভাগ করা হয়
১|আইপি ভার্সন ফোর বা IPv4
২|আই পি ভার্সন সিক্স বা IPv6
ভার্সন অনুযায়ী আমাদের দেশে আইপি ভার্সন ফোর এই বেশি ব্যবহৃত হয়।
আইপি ভার্সন ফোর বা IPv4 ৩২ বিটের হয় এবং
চার অক্টেট হয়। প্রতি অক্টেট বাইনারি সংখ্যা ৮বিটের সমন্বয়ে গঠিত। আইপি ভার্সন ফোর বা IPv4 এর মাধ্যমে ৪২৯৪৯৬৭২৯৬টি ইউনিক এড্রেস
তৈরি করা সম্ভব বা আলাদা আলাদা নাম্বার তৈরি করা সম্ভব।
