Is Ubuntu a bad Linux Distro?
Ubuntu – the distribution that many members of the Linux community love to hate. But why? Is the hate warranted, or are people overreacting? In this video, I’ll give you my thoughts on some of the criticisms that Ubuntu faces nowadays.

ubuntu
ubuntu is like justin beiber it gets hate because it gets alot of love from girls(Non techies)
I use snap packages but I use it on debian. I hate the concept of typing sudo apt install firefox, installs snap instead of deb without asking the user on Ubuntu.
But you can reinstall firefox without snap packaging
I am a novice and hobbyist Linux user right now. Ubuntu is such a great distro for new users. The documentation is one of the best in the Linux community and super helpful for new users. I have been using Debian 12 and love the LXQT as well, it's so light and responsive. At first, I was confused about the snap packages until I tried a few of them and they seemed fine and worked quite well. I'm still checking out the difference in the config files, where folders and config files are, etc… but snap packages are annoying like also the cloud-init coming out. I just want a clean install without all the other barriers, forced features, etc… and that is why I mentioned using Debian 12 and testing it out now as it can be much easier to build a custom project with Linux without all that extra junk like the snap, cloud-init, and just get a simple clean Linux install. Ubuntu is still one of my main installs, and I still think it is Awesome.
I think you made a great analysis of Ubuntu. As much as people hate snaps, I think they've actually improved. With certain apps, I've had better reliability and performance with snaps than with flatpak. Comparing Microsoft Windows and Ubuntu, it should be looked at as a good thing if someone migrates away from Windows, even if it's to Ubuntu. At least it's one less person allowing a big tech giant (Microsoft) to be collecting their data.
Thank you – I echo your opinions.
cc: Get to pints faster… this video could be 10 minutes or less…
i dont think ive ever really used snaps as i run debian and just use debs or flatpaks ive never seen the need to allow snaps i have however played around with ubuntu mate in virtual machine just for fun and i must be honest i really like it. a great implementation of the mate desktop enviroment not really a fan of gnome
Now that Debian 12 has expanded to make it possible to use non-free packages, I believe it has become a great alternative to Ubuntu. In the short time I have used it I have really come to like it. Previous versions of Debian I found limited or requiring a lot of work to fashion to my liking. Not so with Debian 12. The other plus, is as you mentioned, Debian is a community distribution that I want to continue to support and use. I do want to add that first Linux distribution I loaded on my computer was Ubuntu. So I still have a soft spot in heart for them. They have made it possible for many of us to learn Linux and to give life to open source projects throughout the world.
Wrong ! – Most people in the Linux community have respect and like Ubuntu !!!!! – at least in my experience.
Snap sucks on arm I think there almost no aarch64 packages flatpaks are a bit better in terms of aarch64 support…..
so the new debian comes with non free drivers. i installed it onto a beelink u59 and it worked. but when opening the browser and watching a video in fullscreen there was a lot of screen tearing. when running ubuntu on the same machine it runs buttery smooth. is that a driver issue of sorts, or just some other setting ubuntu uses that makes it run better? both times i used xfce4.
tl;dr yes, all distros that are not my favorite distro are a bad distro
I love ubuntu..
I USE UBUNTU AND I HAVE NO ISSUES WITH IT EXCEPT SOMETIME WITH UPDATES SOME THINGS GO A LIL WONKY AT TIMES 🤪I ADJUST TO IT THO SNAPS AND MY GOOGLE APP DISAPPEARED IN ONE OF THEM AND THAT THREW ME OFF THO!OR I MIGHT HAVE DELETED SNAPS BY ACCIDENT
Yes and your reasoning is too simplistic .
The moment snap packages get in my way will be the moment when I will be stopping using ubuntu.
Yes it is. However the rest are even worser.
I dropped Ubuntu in the early days of Unity… Unity was the worst (for me), there was the Amazon spyware story too… at that point, I realized that the distro was not for me. I switched to Debian and have been happy ever since. No hard feelings, just don't ask me to come back…
I really love your perspective. The main factor I dislike about Ubuntu is the limited freedom it offers for customizing my operating system according to my preferences, despite supporting many different flavours. However, the main reason I planned to use Ubuntu after extensive research is because it might be the best option to serve me as an AI researcher.
Society'a opinion should be taken with a grain of salt, always should have been. People just love to hate stuff, even stuff that's great. Ubuntu is the first linux I used in 2006 and I still think it's great today despite the many different decisions Canonical has done with the OS. Ubuntu has had many different and cool features no other linux distro has ever had and I love them.
always the haters !!! Ubuntu in all its flavors ROCK'S !!!!
I agree that there are valid criticisms, however I really like having a company make it's money off of Open Source Software AND deliver a rock solid operating system that boots up and just works.
The installation is dead simple. It walks you through setting up full disk encryption and makes it dead simple. There is A LOT of value in making a few decisions for users, or limit it to a few possible configurations. They make sure that people don't make the LEAST secure decisions possible, they encourage making the MOST secure decisions possible and even when they're "advanced" decisions, Canonical is going to work to make that as simple as possible.
Yes. Ubuntu should change name for "Internal error distro".
I dual boot Ubuntu and Arch for no other reason that sometimes I just want to use one or the other. I also have a Fedora VM on both installations. Fight me.
I hate Ubuntu because it doesn't use latest kernel. They always use the latest kernel just in the beginning and stay behind as months pass. For this simple reason I like Fedora and using it. It's always uptodate with kernel.
I still have an Ubuntu 9.10 CD from when the internet was slow and it was easier to have someone mail you a CD rather than spend 10 hours downloading and then having to burn it to a disk. This was the first Linux I tried and it worked I have used other Distros just to see if they where better but still use Ubuntu as a daily driver. It does need some adjusting but is easy to modify so I keep using it, I do try other Distros in fact I have 3 that I need to put on hardware and test to see if they are any good. so you may be able to say that I have made y own Distro based on Ubuntu.
To hate product because its owned by company and because of that its goes in conflict with your stupid philosophy about open source or whatever 🤡
Is Ubuntu a bad distro? No, not really. the desktop management is certainly questionable. I definitely don't like the direction they've gone by "snapifying" every little program, daemon, etc. Overall it just results in very poor performance, especially when you're operating on older hardware. For what reason does this need to be the case? just to simply have a universal package format? no, and nobody really believes that to be the case. we had appimages and flatpaks long before snaps, we really didn't need them. They just wanted it to be yet another thing under their control. Honestly, looking at all these solutions for the same problem, they all suffer from that performance hit upon launching them. On a server, you probably won't notice it because you're probably running multiple CPU systems. on a desktop however you'd really want to limit it to at most 2 programs, because an end user is going to be very frustrated with slower-than-windows load times on their linux system with everything having to go through this container deployment(that's what these things actually are). Would I recommend it for a server? sure, just not on a desktop. That reminds me I kind of need to get the OS replaced on my dad's desktop, I just need to decide on a destination for it. meh…
That said, the more you make use of linux the more you realize derivatives are pointless, and drift toward the base/original distributions. The most that the majority do to set themselves apart is enabling a couple extra repos, that have a couple extra pieces of software, and whatever custom theme they've whipped up. Very rarely is it anything special that warrants creating a derivative. In the case of Ubuntu, it's base is Debian. Debian Sid(unstable) is much closer to being up to date with Ubuntu's level of package freshness. With bookworm(testing) and stable those packages are going to be a bit dated(usually a version or two in the case of testing and sometimes up to 5 in stable). Yeah, you don't have the latest in firmware installed out of the box, but it's not terribly hard or time consuming to get that going either.
Ubuntu started as a distro that included closed-source binaries to allow an easier experience on laptops. It isn't a real opensource distro because of the closed-source software IMO. It even has the distinction of being called out by Stahlman as being spyware.
I never used it because of security track record was horrid. And honestly, everyone I worked with that used it were Windows converts that I'd have to redo their work. 🤷♂
It's noobsauce…
Well in my experience with Linux and Software in general, you use the stuff that sucks the least. If you search for THE perfect thing you search till the end of time and will never find that.
I personally love Ubuntu, im using 22.04 and as a computer science student it gives me the stability I need, the terminal networking/programming assignments, not stealing my data and even though customization exists, out of the box Ubuntu looks awesome.
@2:23 It is called envy, jealousy but definitely NOT called hate. 🥱🤦♂🤦♂ There is always a reason why not everybody likes something. It is backed up by a huge corporation and it is very likely they screw things up due to conflict of interest like shoving snaps down your throat or telemetry.
I tried to boot Ubuntu from USB and it would not. I tried Linux Mint it boot first time and installed along side Windows with no issues. So I looked no father than Linux Mint. Now it is my main operating system. Thanks for video.
When my Being first try a Linux distro, IT went along with user' experiences, and so IT try a lot of distros except for Ubuntu. Eventually, my Being ignore the Linux users bad raps against Ubuntu, and try it. It turns out that Ubuntu is a great breath of fresh air! Ubuntu is very compatible with almost every firmware. And ever since that discovery, my Being ignores anyone bashing Ubuntu. 🙏🙏🙏
It seems flatpack and snaps will require lager storage which will make running linux on older hardware impossible pr at least more difficult, I miss repos.
They are bad at the leadership level. Technology that they do not invent and control, they suppress. Flatpak is an example.
Great video Thank you
I came to Linux to remove all corporate control from my PC. Ubuntu was my 2nd love as I had on and off used Redhat before that. Redhat moved into the commercial space and away from me, so I moved on to Ubuntu. Ubuntu then did similar things. I don't hate either, and I believe there will always be room for both in the Linux world. However, these models are not for me.
I use both Mint MATE (on the workstation) and Kubuntu (on the laptop). Both boxes run on Ryzen 5 with 32 and 16 GB RAM, respectively. Both distros are extraordinary examples in programming and this "ubuntuphobia" is non-sense: programmers have to eat and pay the rent and those anarchists that complain about Canonical go over the red line, IMO. Snaps were a bd decision but we run unsnap and tha¨s all. best from Nuuk, Greenland. WE FOLLOW YOU. cheers!
No. Not for me it isn't. Others might not dig it, and that's okay. They can always use Arch, and then proceed to evangelize about it everywhere.
👍 video, thank U
I've used Ubuntu on a live disk for a while. It was easy to use, I have no professional need for the distro & don't trust the company that develops & maintane it so I just don't use it. I run Linux for several reasons & love the community's philosophy for the most part. So I'm running w/ & trying out Garuda Gnome, Going to try mate, qtile, i3w… My question to you is what wifi PCIe & keyboard is best for Linux?
So basically Conical is a company involved in servers. Their software is designed to turn a profit on servers. They don’t need to worry about desktop distros? Huh, kind of dumb to me mad at them. Sounds legit to me.
Don’t see Microsoft doing anything but stealing others’ code as they done from the start. When have they even put out a free Linux Distro?
So no, hating Ubuntu is kinda Hivemind. Besides, most haters on the internet are stupid children who haven’t learned social etiquette a day in their lives. Here today, gone tomorrow.
can´t give you a faultless iso file
systemD is the primary reason and the proof for this is that 20 years ago Ubuntu was very popular and people used to like it
because even back then Ubuntu was a canonnical product and of course back then Gnome was not systemD dependand
in fact now i type from Devuan Openrc which is not only safer but faster and lighter on resources…
I strongly prefer to have an encrypted file system on my laptop to provide reasonable protection in case it's stolen. Encryption is a simple (check box) option on many distros, but encrypting the file system with Ubuntu is a pain. I don't know why they can't fix this. It's a deal-breaker for me.
