Junos Architecture – Processes | Introduction to Juniper and JNCIA Part 13

Junos and IOS take very different approaches to operating system design. The two main approaches are monolithic and modular.
Monolithic is a simple but old design strategy. Basically, everything is handled in the kernel. This comes with downsides. For example, a fault in one component can take down an entire system.
A modular operating system separates parts, meaning that different components, including drivers, are independant.

The chassisd process brings line cards and other components online.
Dcd controls devices and interfaces.
Mgd is used for handling incoming management traffic
Rpd manages all routing protocols
Snmpd manages SNMP requests, responses, and traps.
