Learning IPv6 | Free CCNA Training Course

Welcome to the Free CCNA Training Course. This series is for anyone who wants to build on their basic network skills, and even pass the CCNA 200-301 exam.

Section 3 of this series covers IPv6. This covers topics such as an IPv6 overview, how IPv6 addresses work, address types, address assignment, and routing with IPv6.

The website has additional links for further study to take you to the next level. Links are at the end of the description.

In this video, we’re going to cover:
0:00 A History Lesson
3:00 Introducing IPv6
6:21 Exhausted!
9:54 What’s New?

TCP and IP were originally a single protocol. This was separated in 1977 into two protocols, and IPv4 was put into use. It wasn’t expected that the internet would be as popular as it is, so IPv4 wasn’t designed to have a large address space. A few technologies like NAT, private IPs, and CIDR, have helped extend IPv4’s use.

IPv6 improves on IPv4 in a few ways, but noticeably in the size of the address space. It’s 128-bits long, so it has a lot more addresses. The problem is that it is difficult to migrate to IPv6. Even so, it’s getting more popular.

The number of devices connected to the internet is growing, so it’s becoming more important to have a larger address space. The public address space is handed out by an organization called IANA, and sub-groups called RIRs (Regional Internet Registries).
