ROUTING INFORMATION PROTOCOL VERSION 2 (RIP V2):-
Routing Information Protocol Version 2 (RIPv2) is a distance vector routing protocol designed for IPv4 networks. It serves the crucial function of exchanging routing information between routers, enabling them to make informed decisions about the optimal paths for data transmission. RIPv2 improves upon its predecessor, RIPv1, by supporting classless inter-domain routing (CIDR) and VLSM (Variable Length Subnet Masking), allowing for more efficient use of IP address space.
RIPv2 employs a simple and adaptive algorithm to calculate the best routes based on hop count. Periodic updates and triggered updates ensure routers maintain current network topology information. Despite its simplicity, RIPv2 is a widely used protocol in smaller networks where the ease of configuration and implementation outweighs the need for more advanced features. It operates at the transport layer using UDP (User Datagram Protocol) and utilizes a multicast address for communication. While RIPv2 is easy to configure, its limitations make it less suitable for larger, more complex networks where more sophisticated routing protocols may be preferred.
