  • Nice video and all, but if you're gonna point out that someone is spitting baseless accusations, then you should put up sources for your points that disproves them. It helps with new people tuning in to grasp quickly on what's happening and which side is factually incorrect.

  • Telegram CEO ridiculed himself. Telegram is so popular here in Eastern Europe but honestly I do not trust it. I just use it for news channels on Ukraine.

  • Endless blather supporting the U.S. Government's elitist controls in place all over the tech space. You're so naive if you think that the U.S. Government is not fully in control of all tech, including encryption and open source crap. You think that the U.S. Government is not in charge of all things Linux? You're so naive.

  • Your skills within the Linux environment does not prepare you for geo-political wisdom. You have no clue what the US Oligarchy are doing in the world or how they are trying to control all information hubs. US is not a Democracy in any definition, and you are not being told the truth from for-profit media in the US. The US gov are present in all larger tech, and as such, Russia, China and the rest of the world have to block those sources of propaganda.

  • Telegram is a great messenger overall, but using "Telegram" and "privacy" in the same sentence… haha, no.

  • Are there no way to test ios apps other devices than an ios device?

  • These are the same kind of nonsense arguments that are used against DeepinOS.

  • Thank you for the mention of the Rescuezilla update. The last version had a quirky bug (at least on my machine) where it would sometimes crash on the opening selection screen. Just tried it and that issue seems to be fixed.

  • I have been having problems recently with Telegram not loading on my computer. Switched to Signal again, no problem.

  • It's interesting that multiple LEO agencies like the FBI, DEA, and others have all said Telegram does have encryption and they are thwarted by it. Hmmm… And Michael admits squarely that he's not a security or programming expert so his takes have less and less value on the subject.

  • Microsoft Bob, Intel Fred. We need a George next. 😜

  • Your criticism of Telegram is totally valid. Telegram is also totally unable to synchronize "secret" chats between devices. I don't personally know people who currently use it as a secure messenger, it is rather a social network which started as a would-be secure messenger. Signal though, IMHO, is also not really trustworthy. They refused to stop forcing people to use phone numbers for registration, quoting some "combating spam" nonsense as a reason. They promote Google's Playstore over direct downloads from their own site, they are not officially present on F-Droid. They refuse to support Android tablets as secondary devices, only primary, which is a big PIA for those who want the same account on a phone and a tablet (but they do it for iPads). Here were my "political" grievances with them, next are technical ones. They don't have an oficial flatpak, neither an official rpm. Their desktop software doesn't run in Wayland. Finally, their "software" is a glorified web-app built on Electron, arrrggghhh!

  • Edward Snowden thinks Signal is good, so it is good enough for me.

  • Well, I was searching for a BlueStacks alternative for playing android games on Linux with keyboard and mouse. Any good emulator?

  • telegram is an absolute joke as a privacy focused messenger.

  • Telegram is a Russian Program, that goes through Russian servers. No wonder he is criticizing a good program, that Putin cannot control. But he can't say the truth otherwise he might fall from a balcony like others who have displeased Putin. Standard Russian disinfomation.

  • All of social media are channels of some type of propaganda. Opinions stated as fact, who, when, where is lost. And this style is parroted by the legacy outlets, who may provide some sort of willy-nilly conforming "evidence". Very sad, tragic, thanks for your analysis Michael.

  • I used to use Dillo on my Raspberry Pi 3 to open links from Newsbeuter (the predecessor to Newsboat). The sole purpose was to create readable pages that my current cli browser couldn't. I believe it may still be available on Pi OS.

Dang it, I had to go and check, and yes, it's installed on the Pi by default, but it's not visible. In the "System Tools" menu, there is an item, called "Main Menu Editor". Open that, and go to "Internet" and there's Dillo. just check it, and hit OK and you will see it in your Applications menu. 😀

  • I don't know why people are using Signal when we already have Session. Session gives you all the same functionality while not requiring you to give your phone number/identity and signal is located in switzerland , home of W.H.O. and W.E.P. the lovely people who caused the chaos of 2020-24

  • Freaking Eloon Muskrat has no clue! As the seory goes, When he was supposedly "Inventing" PayPal, A few students had already made part of the framework, but as some kind of a "Find the hotties on campus" app (Don't ask! Look it up), and it's makers were already trying to use it for a system more likely they could market, and make income from, and Elon wanted in on it, and they moved in together to knock it out. Word is he was a terrible programmer AKA 'Software Engineer" as he likes to call himself, and he screwed so much up they talked him into marketing and trying to get money, because he seamed to have that part first and foremost on his mind; Making money, and so he did, and PayPal was the result (Under a different name) and since he conned or would have conned investors he swooned, if the ones making the thing didn't deliver, or couldn't because he promised impossible or stupid shit, as he's famous for. Then someone offered an insane way above estimated value offer, and they couldn't say no! And That's how the barely an engineer, and physics illiterate Circus crier started Tesla, also with a bunch of already experienced good people that just weren't getting any financial love. The shit is going to hit the fan on Tesla soon, and it's going to be big news once they finaly figured out he scammed more people for more money than Enron and Bernie Madoff, and by far! It's gonna be bigger than Theranos!!

  • Michael is right and I agree. Telegram is not encrypted (end to end) by default.

  • Every heard of Client side scanning?? waste reading time and hearing time going on about the telegram signal fight, as they both have issue, Signal it is American and there for on most platform will have government forced cliant side scanning weather Signal allow or not(Unless using a custom Linux OS), Telegram is made by a Indian Millionaire so trust worthy he didn't get rich without fucking people over, and as for it non encryption you can change that in the app as you can Whatapp but it still not safe if you OS is being scan to watch if it not Linux it is under the On-line safety bill in UK and I can't remember the US law but it the same one they are using to deencypt messages for law enforcement it called client side scanning using Hash'ing to scan so that they can get around privacy laws, as it only flag but will not list the offence or accusation of an offence. Like paedophilia images. So unless it made by someone you know it vulnerable and American owned is as bad as Indian own, not being American Biased I would rather trust the millionaire Indian, ay least he is rich and less likely to rob me. Less about security more about who you care to see your data. Being English I would rather not aid US currently while things are going on in the world that add up to war crimes and being funded and ignored by the US. But as for these to app it is chose you poison time.

  • As far as the Signal thing, maybe learn how psychological manipulation works. If you don't want folks using or doing something then start throwing out rando stuff like this. If folks are tools of those with agendas and those folks don't want people to speak without being controlled … they do stuff like this. We're talking about Dorsey and Musk … based on the things they've done, why are we even listening to those two nitwits? SMH.

  • 4:46 "I'm a big fan of dark mode" … he says, with loads of bright white scenes scattered through the video, suggesting not a fan of dark mode for videos. 😒

  • "Telegram is barely encrypted" lmao what?
Edit: "I'm not a security expert or a programming expert" Yeah, it shows

  • Awesome episode once again, Thanks Michael!

I really liked your coverage of the Signal vs. Telegram debate. Skepticism of the strongman mentality is required now-a-days. "I HAVE BIG BETTER THING! YOU THING NO GOOD, CAUSE MINE BE BETTER!" is not validation of anything. Strongman and Strawman arguments seem to work so well on the internet to manipulate a lot of people, I'm glad you are not one of them! Please Linux community, don't fall for this! We all need to be especially skeptical of this after the massive liblzma backdoor, and the mal-intending maintainer take-over by beating down the original maintainer with similar baseless arguments and spam accounts agreeing with them… (I agree it was more complicated, but the fundamental methods are similar. I also don't blame the original maintainer of liblzma, I think they're more a victim than anyone).

Thanks for the researched and informed reporting Michael! Granted, there's always reason to be skeptical of messaging apps for anything private (including Signal), that doesn't mean they become vulnerable by a big long rant about how vulnerable they must be "because I said so!". Also, if you're scared to death your government is going to figure out what you're doing, you either live in a dystopia or are doing something you know is wrong… Just because it can be either doesn't mean you get to "choose" you're government must just be overbearing because you don't want to admit to doing something wrong…

Also, while we can't all be security researchers, and we do have to rely on expert opinions often, we need to make sure those "experts" don't have ulterior motives or aren't just making things up. It's not so much "do your own research" as much as it is "check your sources", and back up your "facts".

I hope you had fun at the RedHat Summit! I hope you and Ryan will talk more about it in Destination Linux!

  • "How many people are using your protocol? Just you?! Hm. … Okay." 😂😂

  • if you make a comment on twitter and elon replies with "yep, concerning", then its saver to assume that the opposite is actually true.

  • Regarding the signal versus Telegram nonsense, I believe it is not fair to say that telegram is unencrypted and plaintext outside secret chats. They claim to use their proprietary encryption algorithm, MTPROTO or something, I believe.

While the CEOs arguments are utter rubbish, we should beat em fair and square

  • tucker carlson claims NSA pulled his Signal texts, but i think they hacked his phone and not signal encryption

  • Have a hard time being excited for anything red hat since it's well documented they basically hate white folks lol or those in control at least
