There are so many great Linux-based desktop operating systems nowadays. Actually, there are arguably too many Linux distros, but I digress. For instance, if you are an experienced Linux user, you can opt for something like Debian or Fedora, while novices are probably better served by Ubuntu or Linux Lite.
One of the best operating systems for beginners and Windows-switchers, however, is Linux Mint. This is a no-nonsense Ubuntu-based Linux distro that looks good, is very stable, and ultimately “just works” for many users. All versions of the operating system are named after women, and today, we learn what the upcoming Linux Mint 20.2 will be called.
In an announcement, head developer Clement Lefebvre shares Linux Mint 20.2 is code-named “Uma.” This is a name most famous for belonging to actress — and frequent Quentin Tarantino collaborator — Uma Thurman. The name has origins in the d3ad language of Sanskrit, and it means “splendor or tranquility.”
Other than the name, we don’t have a ton of information about Linux Mint 20.2, but we do know when the beta version should be released — the middle of June. We also learned the Cinnamon and MATE versions will come with a new bulk-renaming app called “Bulky.” The app will be omitted from the Xfce variant, however, as Bulky’s functionality already exists in the Thunar file manager.

One of the most Windows-friendly distributions, the Linux Mint 20.2 Beta operating system is now available for download with the brand new Cinnamon 5.0. Also, there are versions with Xfce 4.16 and MATE 1.24. So, it just came out for testing before the final version and you can get a taste of what’s coming up for this distribution. Therefore, the new Linux Mint 20.2 should only have an official release at the end of this winter, in late July or early August.
The new version of the Linux Mint 20.2 distribution will be called UMA and will be based on the not-so-new Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS. However, this is a version with long-term support. In addition to being based on Ubuntu Focal Fossa, the Linux Mint distribution will come with the Linux 5.4 kernel also LTS. Also, as we’ve already informed, the biggest news should be the new Cinnamon 5.0 environment in its main version. Xfce and MATE editions come with Xfce 4.16 and MATE 1.24 desktops .
Another big change is the inclusion of an entirely new application as part of Linux Mint’s XApps initiative called Bulky (also known as File Renamer ), which can be used to rename files in bulk. The Bulky app is available in Cinnamon and MATE editions , as the Xfce edition comes with a file renamer built into the Thunar file manager.
Linux Mint 20.2 also comes with an updated Warpinator app that lets you select the network interface you want to use to share files, as well as a new optional compression setting for file transfers up to 3 times faster and an updated nvidia-prime applet package which supports computers with AMD/NVIDIA hybrid graphics.
In addition, there are numerous other less-noticed improvements, updated upstream components, and visual changes to make your Linux Mint experience better. If you want to discover them, try a Linux Mint 20.2 beta test right now.
You can download Linux Mint 20.2 beta with images from Cinnamon, Xfce or MATE environments here . However, keep in mind that this is a pre-release version, so DO NOT install or use it as the main system as it may contain unfinished features or bugs that will be fixed in the final release.
