  • Exactly my recommendation. Lived for years on Ubuntu. But they diverged to some weird directions a few times. Snap was the last one, that was too much. But Mint is so much better, should have gone to it a few years before. Not sure how long it will be as my system, but hey, it is not so complicated to change distros. Just keep your home folder, if you have some specific configs for dont'kno ssh or whatnot, keep them and install the new distro. No problem.

  • I've been playing with Linux since about 1995. I've installed lots of different distros over the years but the one I'd still recommend for someone new to the Linux ecosystem would still be Linux Mint. It's a beautifully curated distro with lots of clever work put in by the Mint team to make it tightly integrated, consistent and predictable while still having power reserves. If you're real about learning Linux, you won't actually outgrow Linux Mint as it's the real deal with all the full power available at all times.

  • I ran Mint for well over 10 years until Debian 12 came out, and it's still the first distro I think of for those new to Linux.

  • I installed all 16 Windows releases in Virtualbox VM and I started in 2010 with Window XP Home and Windows 2000 Pro. Now I have them all from Windows 1.04 from 1987 till Windows 11 Pro from now and it also includes the NT releases from the nineties. In 2008 I dual booted Windows Vista and Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and in 2010 I switched to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Windows moved definitively to a Virtualbox VM. I also have all Ubuntu LTS releases from 4.10 till 24.04 Alpha. Occasionally I try new distros too, but after 2 or 3 bugs I delete them. My leftovers are reliable Linux distros; Linux Mint; Zorin; Fedora; Manjaro; Debian; Peppermint and OpenSUSE Leap. Some I maintain since 2018 and every time I switch to the newest release.

My most frequently used and somewhat special VMs are:
    – Xubuntu 22.04 LTS for communication, it boots in <7 seconds and has 2GB. It is loaded always and it runs Evolution, Transmission and Microsoft Edge (for WhatsApp; Skype and FB Messenger). MS-Edge because it is most efficient with memory usage, it swaps out not used tabs 🙂
    – Ubuntu 16.04 ESM for banking, it boots in ~11 seconds and has 1.8GB. It is encrypted by Virtualbox. It runs the latest stable snaps for Firefox and LibreOffice (Calc). Note, that I succeeded in combining all the items once hated by the nerds in one system (Unity, Snaps and Ubuntu Pro) 🙂
    – Windows XP Home to play the wma copies of my CDs and LPs with WoW and TrueBass effects. It boots in 25 seconds on 1 core and it has 768MB of memory 🙂 I installed and activated that VM in March 2010 and it survived 2 VBox owners; 3 desktops and 4 CPUs 🙂 🙂

  • Thanks in part to you, I have installed Antix32, LMDE6 and ArchLinux on my old laptop computers 👍

  • LMDE is my favourite, thanks for the videos you made on it.
