✎ His interest in computers began with a Commodore VIC-20, at the age of 11. The first prototypes of Linux were publicly released in 1991. In 1999, he was designated one of the world’s top 100 innovators under the age of 35 by the MIT Technology Review TR100. His personal mascot is a penguin named Tux, who has become the mascot of the Linux kernel.
Torvalds is now sponsored by the Linux Foundation so that he may work full-time on enhancing Linux. He maintains the ultimate decision-making power over which new code is integrated into the mainstream Linux kernel. The Technology Academy Finland awarded him the Millennium Technology Prize in 2012. He also received the IEEE Computer Society Computer Pioneer Award in 2014. Time magazine named him one of the 60 most influential people in history in 2006. Torvalds owns the “Linux” trademark and oversees its use.
