MicroNugget: How to Use IPv6 Multicast-Routing Rendezvous Points

In this video, Keith Barker covers how to use a Rendezvous Point (RP) in an IPv6 Multicast environment. Keith begins by talking about the Multicast environment, including what it is, what its benefits are, and why you should consider using it. He’ll transition to a discussion of RPs and how they fit into the picture.
Let’s assume you have a hundred clients, and they all want to view a video stream. If you use a Unicast environment, you’ll send that same content a hundred different times to a hundred different IP addresses. You’ll be able to get the video to everyone, but at the cost of a tremendous waste of bandwidth.
Alternatively, you could pump the same content out to a group address as a Multicast destination. This allows you to send out only a single copy of the data, and each user can tune in, substantially reducing the bandwidth you’re using.
Keith will demonstrate how to use Rendezvous Points to make this capability that much easier.

How would this work in a scenario where cable companies abandon CTV and just send out video content via MC groups? Would the RP be above the CPE gateway to subscribe to each "channel" via a group and then the RP at the cable provider's side make a decision if the join request is valid from the network segment (the household) where that "channel" is allowed (e.g. paid subscription)?
Who is the RP for "local" and link-layer MC groups like the all routers or all hosts? Is the local router the RP for the LAN segments attached to it?
You really know your stuff ! Thanks a lot !
hey man.. this information in this video is great… its understandable to such a level that it makes its so easy to learn.. thanks 🙂
really great video thanks!
Thanks for the feedback. Glad you like the video!
Best wishes,
Keith
you are the best . Thanks a lot
Thanks!
Great video. I love IPV6 content. Thanks Keith.
