• Parents should take their damn responsibility. You're expected to keep them safe. Online safety is part of that and it is a parent's responsibility to protect a child who is growing up in a world where nowadays social media is a huge part of our lives. Do not ever underestimate the dangers of social media and even the damage it can cause to your child. It can negatively affect their development in many different aspects.

  Parents should apply parental controls where possible. However you can never trust it to fully block innapropriate content.

  I urge any parent to dive into this topic. It's your duty.

  – Go block certain websites and keywords on the router and monitor the children.
  – Check out the websites they visit and apps they use. You can even do that while sitting next to them while reading a book.
  – Block location access on all social media apps.
  – Adjust settings to make their accounts as private as possible.
  – Have all online activity take place in a common area of the home where others are present.
  – Teach them to not share any personal information or photos online.
  – Follow your child on social media.
  – Regulate the time they spend online outside of school requirements.
  – Tell your kids to ask you whenever they want to download a new app. This way you can see what kind of apps your kid is on.
  – Make sure your kids know they can always talk to you when something uncomfortable has happened online. Don't get angry, this might hold them back from approaching you in the future. Find out what's going on and what needs to be done.
  – Tell them to not take calls or respond to texts from unknown numbers.
  – Lastly, tell your kids to think before they post, before they comment or send someone a message. If you wouldn't say it in person, don't send it. Be nice and stay away from drama.

  There's more things you can do, it's important to keep yourself up to date about social media and ways to protect your children. You don't have to be extreme about it. Nothing about mentioned above is extreme at all. It is needed. It's the same as telling your kids to look both ways before crossing the street. The same as telling them to not follow strangers. It's safety.
