Elden Ring[a] is a 2022 action role-playing game developed by FromSoftware. It was directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki with worldbuilding provided by fantasy writer George R. R. Martin. It was published for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on February 25 by FromSoftware in Japan and Bandai Namco Entertainment internationally. Players control a customizable player character who is on a quest to repair the Elden Ring and become the new Elden Lord.

Elden Ring is presented through a third-person perspective; players freely roam its interactive open world. The six main areas are traversed using the player character’s steed Torrent as the primary mode of travel. Linear, hidden dungeons can be explored to find useful items. Players can use several types of weapons and magic spells, including non-direct engagement enabled by stealth mechanics. Throughout the game’s world, checkpoints enable fast travel and allow players to improve their attributes using an in-game currency called runes. Elden Ring features an online multiplayer mode in which players can join for cooperative play and player-versus-player combat.

During planning, FromSoftware wanted to create an open world game with gameplay similar to Dark Souls; the company wanted Elden Ring to act as an evolution of the series debut. Miyazaki admired Martin’s previous work, and hoped that his contributions would produce a more accessible narrative than those of the company’s earlier games. Martin was given unrestricted freedom to design the backstory while Miyazaki was lead writer for the in-game narrative. The developers concentrated on environmental scale, role-playing, and the story; the scale required the construction of several structures inside the open world.

Elden Ring received critical acclaim for its open world, gameplay systems, and setting, with some criticism for its technical performance. It is among the most awarded games in history with 324 Game of the Year awards and sold over 20 million copies in a year. An expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, was announced in February 2023.
The title of Elden Lord was given to the consorts of Queen Marika the Eternal. What power and authority the Elden Lord wields is unclear, as is the nature of the relationship between an Elden Lord and their deity. In the case of the consorts of Queen Marika, they appear to have been able to wield the power of the Elden Ring to an unknown extent.

While Godfrey was the first consort of Queen Marika,[2] and is thus known as the first Elden Lord, other deities have had their own consorts, who appear to have played a similar role as that played by Marika’s Elden Lord. Dragonlord Placidusax for example, is said to have been Elden Lord in the age before the Erdtree, and continues to await his gods return.[3]
The first Elden Lord in the Age of the Erdtree was Godfrey, who led Marika’s armies in many wars to secure the supremacy of the Golden Order. When his last worthy enemy fell, Marika robbed Godfrey and his followers of grace, and exiled them from the Lands Between, bidding them to travel far and continue fighting,[4] so that they might grow strong enough to one day return and reclaim the Elden Ring.[5] Godfrey and his warriors would thus become the first Tarnished.

With Godfrey banished, Marika took Radagon, a champion of the Erdtree and secretly her male “other self”, as the second Elden Lord.[6] Once Marika shattered the Elden Ring, Radagon tried to repair it, but both she and Radagon would end up imprisoned deep within the Erdtree, the two now bound in a single body.

With Radagon’s disappearance, and the failure of any of the Shardbearers to unite the shattered fragments of the Elden Ring, grace was once again extended to the Tarnished, and they returned to the Lands Between in order to once again brandish the Elden Ring and claim the title of Elden Lord.

When the player character goes down the Elden Lord path and collects enough Great Runes, they may choose to repair the Elden Ring within Marika (whether on its own or using any of the three Mending Runes) and usher in a new age of their choosing. They thus become the third Elden Lord and effectively Marika’s third consort, even if she remains in her shattered and unresponsive state.[7]
Should the Tarnished champion find the ring and give it to Ranni, she will take the champion as her new consort, and grant them a greatsword as a symbol of their union. She will reveal to them the full extent of her plan: to succeed Queen Marika as god and usher in her “Age of the Stars”, removing herself far from the Lands Between to journey out into the c
