Object Lifetime Issues – a Threat for Safety? – Wolfram Sang, Consultant / Renesas
Object Lifetime Issues – a Threat for Safety? – Wolfram Sang, Consultant / Renesas
The Linux Kernel has issues handling some object lifetimes correctly. In parts, this is known for more than a decade. The topic gained attention because of talks at LinuxPlumbers 2022 (Laurent Pinchart), FOSDEM 2023 (Bartosz Golaszewski), and EmbeddedOSS 2023 (Wolfram Sang), but its full impact is still being researched. In this talk, Wolfram presents his research about object lifetime issues in areas which are more likely to be relevant for safety certifications. After a careful explanation of the issue itself, test patterns and strategies will be discussed and demonstrated. Related questions will also be addressed, like: If such issues are known for a so long time, how will this affect evidence in a “Safety by Process” argumentation? And what does it mean for a product if a proper fix needs to rewrite an essential part of a Kernel subsystem?
