“Learn by doing” is our philosophy & sometimes it bites us in the bum. It took 4 years of boating to learn THIS crucial information about our engine.
Don’t worry though, we’ll take one for the team so you don’t have to learn the hard way 👍

Sailing Truisms. 'Never seize on bolts, Di-electric grease on power connections and Lime in de Coconut'… 🥴
Je moet de motor is beter bijhouden slordig
Always give rusty bolts a good crack with a hammer on the head. if it moves and starts to seize, penetrating oil and back and forth.
If doing any planned maintenance always get the engine warm and spray all bolts and nuts with penetrating oil the day before. If you can do it for a week before every day.
a new albow. part nr 3581031 Exhaust riser
First you spray with WD40 or the like let it sit, use a torque wrench to tighten to the proper torque, then loosen, sometimes going back and forth not exceeding the set torque, if it ones not move then heat the bolt with a propane torch then rapidly cool the head with an ice cube repeat same procedure. Have a m2003. 1989 when I bought the boat changed the cooling system so that the last two minutes would run on the fresh water system, this also allowed me to back wash the intake. Leaving it with fresh water is key, in the saltwater side. Does it take 1-2 gallons of fresh water sure but in the 15 years owning her nd 750 hours on the engine never a problem. Cleaned the heat exchanger once did not want to ever do that again. Tach runs off of the stator rotation and has an adjustment on the back of the Tachometer. She loves to run at 1725-1800 will run all day at that, they all will overheat over 2500 rpm in warm water over 80 degrees, run the output water through your hot water heat exchanger will give you extra time in rough seas also a hot water for a shower after a stormy sail. Beneteau Oceanis 350 89. She is a great engine if maintained. Put biocides I your fuel tank. Never change your fuel filters on cold engine. Chech your motor mounts. Get JB weld for metal, wood, plastic. Only pull the engine on the hard unless you want a sunk boat. Odds are your alignment will have to be redone same as our unless bearing, etc. There are good yards in the islands ask around for expert service to get your engine up too spec, it is far too important as a safety for beloved wife to be. Note on my manifold that I made I can also run the water on the bilge incase of an emergency. Shutting off he engine through hull every time becomes a habit keeps the ball valve working great. Fair Winds..
Like you said, use lots of anti-seize and maybe some stainless steel hardware…..it should help. Also be careful when or if you have to torque any nuts or bolts, because if you use anti-seize on these, you could over torque the bolts or nuts by 20 percent or more…. then the stud or bolt could be stretched and weaken’ed. Hope that makes sense.
Always antisieze every bolt before assembly and you will not have broken bolts. Also a propane torch helps loosen old bolts.
YOU GUYS SHOULD USE PAINT AND GREASE!!! Every part that comes off should be wire brushed to get all the rust off. Then paint it with anti corrosion paint.
I always use oil based enamel and let it bake in the sun. Nuts and bolts get wire brushed but paint nuts and bolts.
I agree with Joel, it's much easier to get off than it is to get it on… Pun intended
Hi rise for use without a water lock muffler?
Hey sailor! The salt water on the bolts rusted them together. Next time put grease over the bolt. The grease will help keep the salt off. Fancy marine shops use never seize. That’s fine too.
I got a Youtube recommend to watch one of these BOAB videos and was expecting the usual mix of technically advanced but tedious bloke, piece of perfectly pleasant crumpet who cavorts and disports herself for the Kleenex brigade and succeeds in being vacuous enough for their needs, and drone shots of nice beaches, the boat from a long way above and some nice, turquoise seas.
Whilst none of this is a major problem, it is a heavily over-supplied commodity, so I was ready to hit 'back' when I suddenly realised this wonderful, gorgeous couple have something extra to offer: a very distinct and unique sense of humour, as well as being genuinely, spontaneously FUNNY!! This is so refreshing, so light-hearted and so eminently watchable that I subbed within a minute. Since then I've learned a lot from you both, as well as falling in puppy love with a very fine young quadruped swimmer. Am now on a binge-watching session that could last a good while because some of the videos need watching more than once.
My only complaint is about Willy. He really needs to get his sh*t together NOW. He needs to lay off the intoxicating millet prior to filming, get his ridiculously simple dialogue sorted out, and he needs to look to his laurels. To my mind, he's proving to be an irresponsible nincompoop, hypocritical, and – dare I say it – a bit of a bloody idiot.
Willy, address your irresponsible attitude – shape up or ship out.
Sorry, but somebody had to say it before he destroys everything you've worked so hard to achieve.
Hmmm new Yanmar's cost $3000 perfect for your boat more fuel efficient and will save weight. NO way I would put another Grand in that elbow or boat. Insanity is working on the same boat for years expecting it to sail.
i am running a 1969 perkins 4-107 in my Cal Jensen pilothouse sloop, like any diesel motor, PM (preventive maintenance) is ALWAYS the key, I would recommend saving your pennies finding a port where you can pull your motor and do a complete rebuild, do this along with a PM program and you will get many many many many years of faithful service from the old motor! cheers and GOOD LUCK!!
You need a hotair gun
Not for nothing but looking at that motor on the outside I can only imagine what the inside looks like. Get a new yanmar call it a day
Look like you got there a great mooring anchor!
Another Carter 33 , this one in Aussie! Check out the end of the video. https://youtu.be/wRw-XfBBiDc Dangar marine. Cheers Warren
A torch might help with bolts (or the entire boat, but that's another story), but also some very small back and forth pressure. Never go full pressure on something like that. But, that doesn't even look like it is taking much pressure to snap. Good luck 🙂
Hi Guys. Greetings from Ireland. Very entertaining channel. You should consider the standard exhaust outlet and install it as shown in Figure 4 in the following https://goodoldboat.com/cool-quiet-and-trouble-free-exhaust/
woah!!
Sorry to hear about the engine troubles. Especially the water pump bolts. Everything is a lesson. The takeaway is that when you put it back together is that you won't take any short cuts. Use the right bolts. Use anti seize. Torque to spec. If you can- clean any mating surfaces and paint them before hand (allowing time for it to dry thoroughly) to prevent corrosion.
You are on a boat during a lock down. What else do you have to do? Make it fun!
There is a law of mechanical things that one depends on it is, pay me now or pay me a lot more later. While you have the opportunity and are close to land do all the maintenance you can to your engine. Which might include taking all the accessories and manifolds off cleaning them chasing the threads replacing the bolts and replacing the parts that are of questionable serviceability. You depend heavily on that engine it must be reliable, which it is not now. Advice from an old farm boy that has paid many a high price for untimely breakdowns.
Keep the puppy dog away from the coolant it tastes sweet to dogs and it kills them so be careful and stay safe you two broke bolts in the block before it sucks just maybe it's time for a new engine fund raising campaign mmmm maybe
Keep Calm !!

Do you have a flapper on your exhaust? That is the first line of defense.
very nice episode. always fun to see the bums trying the impossible and finding new and bigger problems.and yes this rusty old motor beast has lots of dark secrets to uncover! hope they do not sink the boat too early as i want to see more hilarious episodes.i love the attitude of never giving up. you have to have a very special mindset to work on something which delivers endless hair-raising issues. "Learn by doing" cannot be the only motivation here. These bums for sure get very bored in comfort zones.
Looks like the only thing holding that motor together is rust.
hi check and clean the remainder of the exhaust .the riser might be saved remove with heat and wd40 the three blanking bungs clean /scrape out. then have the inside sandblasted put on New rubber boots and a New pressure filler cap the boot clamps must be tight use a socket if you can. and re check after hot hope this helps stay safe
you need to refurbish that engine or replace completely
