Open Source Edge Development, Orchestration & Security with LF Edge Project Eve

IoT edge is heterogeneous, comprised of a diverse mix of technologies including sensors, control systems, communication protocols, hardware types, operating systems, applications, networks, cloud connections, and more. This results in multiple deployment models, creating unnecessary complexity for developers building, deploying, securing, and running edge applications across edge technologies. Android solved this complexity for mobile application developers by providing a standardized and open platform for building, deploying, running, and securing mobile applications, regardless of the underlying hardware. Project Eve aims to do for the IoT edge what Android did for mobile. It’s an open edge computing engine that supports containers and clusters (Docker and Kubernetes), virtual machines, and unikernals to enable the development, orchestration, and security of cloud-native and legacy applications on distributed edge compute nodes, with the choice of any hardware, application, and cloud.

For this meetup, we’ll be hosting Roman Shaposhnik and Aaron Williams, who will share the background to why Project Eve exists, the targeted and example use cases, and how you can get involved and started with Project Eve.

About Roman
Roman Shaposhnik is a co-founder and head of Product and Strategy at ZEDEDA (an Edge Orchestration company AKA “VMWare of the Edge”). Prior to starting ZEDEDA, Roman has spent time building scalable, cloud-native compute and data platforms at Sun microsystems, Pivotal, and Cloudera. He has also contributed to numerous open-source projects and has been on the boards of directors at Linux and Apache Software Foundations.

About Aaron
Aaron is the developer advocate and community manager for LF Edge, which means that his “customers” are developers, project managers, tech writers, and the other community members that build projects under the LF Edge umbrella. In addition he is always encouraging new community members to make their first contribution to the projects. Aaron is passionate about bringing new technologies to developers, non-technical, and the next generation, via hacking and hands-on training. Aaron has extensive experience in the Internet of Things (IoT), retail, and connect vehicles. And he has multiple patents in these spaces.

About Zededa
Zededa, Inc. designs and develops enterprise software. The Company focuses on a cloud-native approach to the deployment, management, and security of real-time edge apps. Zededa serves energy, automotive, and industrial automation industries in the United States.

About LF Edge
LF Edge is an umbrella organization that aims to establish an open, interoperable framework for edge computing independent of Hardware, silicon, cloud, or operating system. By bringing together industry leaders, LF Edge will create a common framework for hardware and software standards and best practices critical to sustaining current and future generations of IoT and edge devices. They are fostering collaboration and innovation across the multiple industries, including industrial manufacturing, cities and government, energy, transportation, retail, home and building automation, automotive, logistics and health care — all of which stand to be transformed by edge computing.
