Parallels Amid Open Source and IP Collaboration

The Michigan Intellectual Property Law Association (MIPLA) — an association of Intellectual Property attorneys, patent agents and law students from across the State of Michigan who are interested in patents, trademarks, copyrights and other Intellectual Property (IP) issues — invite Keith Bergelt, Open Invention Network’s CEO, to speak about the current Open Source environment, trends and the future.

There are many parallels between Open Source technology and patent collaboration. Open Source is a model for business innovation that allows companies to compete more effectively. Companies collaborate to create Open Source code and release it under a set of rules. Copyright and patents are two elements of IP involved with Open Source. The work to protect Open Source requires collaboration between patent attorneys, compliance managers and IP professionals, among others.

Open Source is changing the way we invent. Most companies in the next 5 years, will no longer describe themselves as hardware companies. We are emerging as a software-centric world. The Open Source movement has spread into virtually every industry. OIN’s global membership represents this trend and includes companies of all sizes across all industries.
