PEV 05h – Booting Linux…. via DOS!

5 thin clients for $5 – sounds like a lot of cheap fun!
What a silly BIOS they have! Ethernet, serial, VGA, what else could you need.
Read more about my adventures with the thin client at https://polprog.net/blog/winterm/

Wyse Winterm S10. The embedded OS at the end sits in the flash behind the IDE controller. Some windows NT/CE build, judging by DOS style disk identifiers appearing throughout the interface.

  • How did you get DOS on these?! I've tried MS-DOS, Dr DOS, PC-DOS 2000, and FreeDOS. Boot off a USB flash drive, USB floppy or CD and they can't see the IDE controller. I've also tried installing MS-DOS directly onto the Disk On Module using another PC but when plugged back into the Sx0 it starts to boot then fails because the BIOS hides the IDE. The FreeDOS installers can see the IDE during boot but by the time it gets to the installer IDE is hidden and it gives me a No Fixed Disk Present error.

  • Great work! I plan to convert my remaining stack of S10's to serial terminals for ham radio use!
