Pop!_OS – Is It Better Than Ubuntu?

PoP!_OS is based on Ubuntu but it is not just another Ubuntu clone with different clothing.

Many believe it is a better Ubuntu because of it’s emphasis on simplicity and functionality. This is partly because System76 are a hardware vendor
who ship their products with Pop pre-installed. It therefore makes sense and it is in their interests to ensure their customers get the best experience possible.

The differences between Pop and Ubuntu are many, ranging from software tweaks – e.g. easier to set up a gaming system with Pop than Ubuntu, through to a minimal Gnome setup much closer to vanilla gnome than Ubuntu.

Disk encryption is also the default.

Nvidia users will appreciate that the drivers, even for optimus, are baked in from the get go.

Flatpaks are used instead of snaps, but the user is given the choice of a deb file if one is available, and of course Pop has it’s own look and feel.

The latest release has also incorporated a tiling feature that can be turned on or off at the click of a button.

In this review I primarily look at the tiling feature as this is probably one of the most controversial aspects. Not quite a tiling WM, but with some tiling functionality? Is this even a thing?
