Port forwarding part 1 static ip address

For those of you wanting to host a server from your home computer setting up a static ip address is the first step. If you don’t know the make and model of your modem/router pick it up and look at the bottom or side, you will find it. When it comes time to login to your modem or router you will need the default login info here

The first step to hosting a server is setting up a static ip. On your HOME NETWORK your modem or router uses something called DHCP which basically assigns anything connected to your network (computers, media players, laptops, etc.) a network ip. Your computer by default is set up to accept any ip your HOME NETWORK (not to be confused with your public ip) gives it. You need to change this setting to a “static ip” so it is always the same and doesn’t get random ip’s from your modem or router. This way when people connect through the internet to your computer your router/modem knows what ip (what computer) to send them to. This is called port forwading.
