PROOF That Portable Update Still Works in 2023

Originally recorded November 7, 2023.

I have been pestered rather incessantly from a certain ItsYaBoyJesse about Portable Update for Windows not working. Back in 2021, I had told him that the Windows Update Agent in Windows 7 must be manually updated first in order for Portable Update, or even Windows Update built-in to Windows 7 to work. But as typical, he ignored the guy who does this professionally and then still complains it doesn’t work. And I didn’t even write the program!

As part of an upcoming project, I decided to resurrect the old Computerbox and see if it still worked, and decided to check for updates. This one has had the Agent updated already, and Portable Update ran as usual. This was a quick-paced edit for those like him that have the attention span of a goldfish. There will be a 3 part series on this machine, leading up to the Panasonic Plasma TV install in the basement in the corner of Club Jay. Everything here is a process and a project and takes way longer than originally expected. There are always things that need to be done before other, or side projects that are spawned or “while I’m doing this, I ought to also do that because the time is right”. But once done, the fixtures in service here have full functionality or the capability to expand at any time. This TV is a big setup process to get everything just the way I want it. And since it’s my house, it ought to be the way I want it, because otherwise it wouldn’t feel like home.

  • Dang! Another Touch Of, or Captain with a faulty elevator?!

  • Honestly, I don't disagree with him. I think you're missing an important point from the very beginning. You said that it "used to work" on Windows XP, so maybe that answers half the question. Whenever I would first download portable update and extract it from the ZIP file, for whatever reason it says (condensed version) "Portable update requirements not met. Port. Update can run offline but needs internet to download tools. Re-run on a computer connected". It ALWAYS has an internet connection and it gives this error, so that is not the problem. Clearly it is something else. That's not to say it never worked for me, I recall it boots up on more modern OSes more easily. Though if you want something reliable, I highly recommend Legacy Update and it will get the job done in the exact same way, especially if it's on an old computer.
