Proxy vs Reverse Proxy Explained

Access the Internet via Bright Data’s proxy network https://brightdata.com/powercert

This video explains the difference between a forward proxy and a reverse proxy. A proxy server acts as a middleman between a private network and the internet, safeguarding the network by regulating traffic, blocking harmful websites, masking client IP addresses, logging user activity, bypassing content restrictions and commonly used for web data collection. A reverse proxy enhances security for servers by hiding their IP addresses, blocking malicious traffic, and implementing load balancing to distribute traffic evenly.

  • The versatility of Zeus Proxy's multiple IPs allows me to adapt to different situations and requirements, ensuring seamless browsing and transactions.

  • Varnish HTTP (reverse proxy) and memcached (SQL caching "proxy") saved my employers website & app servers from numerous DDoS attacks. Like, multi gigabit level.

  • The main benefit of a forward proxy is while you can do filtering, blocking and logging on individual machines it is MUCH easier for the admin to config and manage it on one box. But it also makes a single point of failure if not configured correctly!

  • Sorry, but it still is not obvious the difference between proxy and reverse proxy which might be setup on Apache web server, both of them are working on server side, so the proxy will be used by lots of users from internet, but it is different to the reverse proxy and I don't have any idea what is the difference. The only different thing I know that reverse proxy will change URLs to avoid confusion on client side, but it wasn't mentioned in the video.

  • Bla bla bla bla

    How does it do it?
If it just forwards the request , it will forward malicious ones as well !!!!

    Is there any mechanism?

  • To seamlessly perform tasks in another region, using a proxy becomes necessary to effectively change your IP address. Zeus Proxy would be a good choice

  • What a proxy does is strip the heads from packets, hiding the network behind the proxy.

  • Company sets a proxy for speed and access , I (client) requests for access to whatever, Reverse Proxy is like a middle one single road Traffic that Can Restricts acess to actual Proxy server so can't be flooded or other pentesting

  • When you click on something educational just for it to not educate you instead just be an ad

  • Well explained. Well done. So, in other words, Forward Proxies are "talking" to "Reverse Proxies" and the other way around. The clients never talk to each other but let the Proxies do the "talking" for them.

  • Proxy servers are also great for hackers to hide in so they could conduct a man in the middle attack on you!

  • Stands out for its excellence, Zeus Proxy has proven to be the best proxy provider in my testing, featuring solid customer success support and dependable IPs within its large pool, all at an affordable price.

  • 'A proxy keeps track of what websites are visited'
That's how a friend of mine got fired. They concluded he was 'watching' youtube most of the day while wroking. …but all he did was listen to music over his headphones while keeping the YT window minimized. …to not be distracted by the office noise around him to be able to work harder.

  • What's the difference Proxy and VPN?

  • SuperThanks! I've been using squid for decades, and still couldn't wrap my head around the idea of a reverse proxy until I watched your video!

  • I'm amazed I could finally understand reverse proxies.
    Thank you so much.

  • Just some feedback for your sponsor. I was interested but I can't find pricing anywhere on their website without signing up. So effectively they've missed a potential customer.

  • absolutely superb and understandable explained. thank you very much 😁also the animated servers and proxies look very cool

  • I have spent way too much time trying to figure out what a reverse proxy is. I wish i found this video faster. This is by far the best explanation i have come across

  • Do you happen to have any tutorials on how to make your own simple proxy server?

  • Whats the point of hiding the ip numbers when your proxy sells your traffic data anyway 😅

  • Another instantaneously created fan here! Thanks for such a concise explanation. I've worked with proxies since a long time ago, but this was a very good explanation 👏

For some reason, the "reverse" part in the name of the reverse proxy never "clicked" on my mind, but saying like you did, on protecting servers instead of clients makes so much sense!.

I never read a previous documentation saying it like that, and I read quite some, it always says forwarding traffic, but again, the reverse forwarding is a convoluted way to say just forwarding.

    Thanks!!

  • How does a reverse proxy help prevent a ddos attack? Wont the proxy just end up getting overwhelmed and crash instead of the private server, effectively still taking the website down?

  • what would be a difference between reverse proxy and load balancers? It sounded like reverse proxy and load balancers e.g F5 are same to me. Please explain.

  • This explanation is, by all means, incomplete. Let me give you an example of the usage I personaly had to do of a reverse proxy.
First of all let me introduce you to the context:

I had to work on an HP Proliant Server, the client had a single public IP address available but two different websites which had to run on dedicated apache2 servers which in time where set to listen for a specific web address over the same ip.

Well, I used ESXI first of all, to manage virtual servers on the physical hardware, and I installed 3 virtual servers, 2 of them where LAMP Servers (Linux Apache MySQL PHP) and the third one was a reverse proxy.

I set the configuration in a way that all the incomming traffic was sent to the reverse proxy and then, through the reverse proxy I redirected the traffic based on the domain name (or web address) to the corresponding apache2 server.

With this I'm trying to explain that another usage of a reverse proxy is to handle redirects in order to have multiple servers mounted on the same ip address but listening on different domain names.

  • Also what is the difference between a firewall and a proxy server? Seems they act in similar ways

  • Ok, I am wondering. It seems there's many devices that sit in between the private network and the public internet. If so, where exactly does a proxy server sit if I thought the router and the firewall is also the middleman between the private network and the public internet? That sort of confuses me

  • You need to start teaching others how to teach tech like this! You have found the right formula

  • Man I've been a software engineer for decades and I'm embarrassed to say I never could figure out what a reverse proxy is until now. Thank you for such a great video!!!

  • What is the difference between firewall and proxy ??

  • Like your videos so much, it provides a huge network knowledge to me. Can anyone tell me what's the difference between proxy and dns server?

  • You have explained proxies in a simple and yet excellently illustrated way! Great content as always!
