IPI – Installer Provisioned Infrastructure

Here in this method of OCP installation, the installer program is designed in such a way that it will take all the default configuration values when it is run in your bootstrap machine. You must get this installer program from RedHat Site – https://console.redhat.com/openshift/create. You can download and use this installer in any of your favorite public cloud, or you private datacenter or in your local machines. Each of this category environment has its own installer.

UPI – User Provisioned Infrastructure Cluster

When it comes to UPI installation, most of the above-mentioned processes will be done by you manually.

Before starting this process of installing through installer, you must provide below virtual machines.

I am taking an example of creating OpenShift Container Platform in a VMWare vSphere environment. Make sure that you have the below virtual machines are available before starting the OCP installation process in UPI method. Make sure you assign enough vCPUs and memory for each of the below virtual machines.

• Bootstrap machine – This virtual machine will be used for you to copy your installer manually using the SSH key to pull the image.
• Master Nodes – You need to provision minimum three master nodes in case if you plan to deploy an enterprise application
• Worker Nodes – You need to provision minimum three worker nodes in case if you plan to deploy an enterprise application.
• Bastion machine: You need to provision this virtual machine to provide access to your private network from an external network that connects to the internet.
• Load Balancer: This LB virtual machine is needed to rout all requests and distributes across your worker nodes where your work load runs.

  • Hello, I have one question on UPI and IPI method. In UPI method do we have bootstrap VM like we have in IPI method or it has only physical node.
