Renato Recio – The Coming Decade of System Networking Discontinuities – Technion lecture
Renato of IBM – lecture delivered on June 7, 2012 at Technion. The traditional Data Center Networking (DCN) model is under a transitory period, where several emerging technologies may cause significant discontinuities and result in a new dominant model. Clients are seeking: optimized fabrics that are flat and converged, simpler network control and management, automated network virtualization services and a platform for which to run agile network services. This presentation will cover the client requirements that are influencing the demand side of these new solutions, as well as some of the emerging technologies.
Traditional Data Center Networks suffer from scaling, traffic and service inefficiencies. Today, as port count requirements increase, tier based scaling is used the keep up with the port count. Tier based scaling relies on adding tiers of expensive switches, with repetitive network processing at each tier in the topology. Additionally, the management of many, independent switches, increases management complexity. Dedicated fabrics are used to carry different traffic types. Finally, today’s network software model results in complex network service deployment, which do not provide optimal virtualization support.
This presentation will provide an overview of several emerging technologies that are vying for a disruptive position in Data Centers. Network flattening technologies seek a significant tier and switch reduction, each of these technologies comes with its own set of challenges — examples include Cisco’s VNTag based fabric extenders and Juniper’s QFabric. Several technologies are also emerging that redistribute network intelligence; eliminate unnecessary, repetitive processing; and reduce the number of managed switches — examples include layer-3 Distributed Overlay Virtual Ethernet (DOVE) switches, OpenFlow, and Software Defined Networking. These too face their own set of adoption challenges.
