Rocky Linux: Full Installation Walkthrough

Rocky Linux aims to be “100% bug-for-bug compatible” with Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and is one of several potential distributions you can migrate to from CentOS as we used to know it. In this video, we’ll take a look at the installation process.

  • I'm getting into Linux because I got a free computer and didn't want to deal with windows anymore. The way you explain things in laymen's terms caused me to subscribe lol. I am going to enjoy learning terminal commands through your channel. I want to use Linux to set up a video editing machine and the program I want to use requires rocky Linux

  • Thanks you for this video. I tried to install rocky linux on my old MacBook Pro mid 2012 (no more updates from apple). It always gives me an error message : "mantel boot and hfsplus tool missing", that error prevent the installation.

  • Rocky : Feelin' strong now, won't be long now
    Feelin' strong now

  • I tried Rocky Linux 9 to install but unfortunately, I encountered no audio. I don't have this issue with Ubuntu and Fedora. Any fix for this issue? Thank you.

  • I actually got kind of curious about this one so i always watch youtube videos of people using different versions.

  • so one should still be able to set it up as a multi boot on a system as you can install it on a partition and not the enter drive????

  • Thanks as I was Installing v9.1 on Assembled System as it helped me alot ❤️

  • As you say in almost every video that you install diff distro on bare metal so how you record the video 😊

  • 7:15 – That is odd ; of course, the Rocky Linux 9 ISO I downloaded has more installation options. There are two server installation options: Server, and Server with GUI. But there is also Workstation.

  • Invalid image

    Failed to read header: Unsupported

    Failed to load image: Unsupported

    start_image() returned Unsupported

When I try to dual boot rocky linux along with window 10 it will through this error…i am new to Rocky Linux…someone please guide me how to resolve this.

previously i installed ubuntu, debian this problem never occured.

  • And the answer is: Warning: Unsupported maximum keycode 569, clipping.
X11 cannot support keycodes above 255. Which is to say, they are not supporting semi-modern Dell Keyboards.
This time it did not gripe about an invalid EDID from the monitor, but MESA is still unable to load a shared object – /usr/lib64/dri/radeon_dri.so
And Why, oh Why did someone decide it would be a good idea to have D-BUS start ModemManager, even if no Modem is detected?

Since I selected Server with GUI from the beginning, my results were different. I am also installing on a real HP DL380 Gen5 server. After all the selections, it goes through the install. Important: !! when doing a re-install, you must select reformat on all partitions or it will not let you save any other changes you have made. So on to the install. Walk away for a bit. After the install, after the first boot, it makes me stop and accept the license, a step I think he skipped. On completion of this, it drops to a screen with the Rocky logo and a mouse pointer, that will never move. I have tried a couple of different mice. I am kind of stuck. Should I give it the 3 finger salute? Is there something else I should type to get to a user selection screen? Should I reboot again? In the interest of time, I am going to go back and try again doing it the way Jay did and that did not work. I am using the latest Rocky 8.6 and the shown GNOME option is no longer there on any install option. I still end up stuck. The system is not unresponsive as the various lock keys will light the respective lights on the keyboard, something they taught me at Dell won't happen if the CPU is hung. Odd that it installs, reboots and loads, then the screen hangs and it won't let me go any further.

  • Hey Jay, what happens when there's no ON/OFF switch to connect to your network what are going to do. On my end it keeps showing that no network device available. Pls help me

  • Please remove the background music. It's very distracting, and if you want to watch videos at 1.5 or 2x speed (like I do), it makes the content almost unwatchable. The background music really has to go.

  • i just uninstalled RL the reason was that the RL 8.5 is not stable when it comes to Virtualization, you will face kernel module and libvirt libs related issues. Alma has no issue with virtualization so i would recommend Alma over RL.

  • Oracle Linux is also binary compatible with RHEL. And it's free!
Edit: It is strange that Rocky Linux removed all the possible setup at the installation that CentOS had. Why are they re-inventing the wheel again when they had it done completely and working is beyond me and is a reason why I will doubt Rocky Linux for the next few years as it is not a copy cat of CentOS as it should have been out of the gate. It is something completely new that will require a lot of testing before putting thing on a server for production use as it was possible with CentOS. Again, Oracle Linux is much more "production ready" and free for whatever usage you want to do.
