Secure your web server with antivirus software Clamav. How to install and configure Clamav on Ubuntu 18.04 / 20.04?
In this episode we are going to install and setup ClamAV to scan our server to ensure files uploaded to the server are clean. While Linux is known to be one of the more secure operating systems, that doesn’t mean it is impenetrable to virus attacks. One Watchguard study has shown that 36% of total top malware cases were reported on Linux systems and these numbers are not going down. It also states that 82% of the attacks target webservers. That’s more than enough to alert anyone about their VPS and server security. Therefore, you need an antivirus to give your system better online protection.
ClamAV is an open source antivirus engine for detecting trojans, viruses, malware, adware, rootkits and other malicious threats. It supports multiple file formats, file and archive unpacking, and multiple signature languages such as hash-based signature matching, wildcards, boolean logic and any custom rules written in Bytecode language.
ClamAV includes a multi-threaded scanner daemon, command line utilities for on demand file scanning and automatic signature updates. One of its main uses is on mail servers as a server-side email virus scanner.
What is Server Antivirus?
It’s software used to provide virus protection to servers, that connect to business networks. It plays a vital role in corporate security by helping to ensure the business network and critical systems are safeguarded from malware and virus, which is one of the most common types of attack.
Does a web server need an antivirus software installed?
Web Server: Web servers always need antivirus because users are going to be uploading files and/or linking to other sites. Antivirus is useful even if the file upload is not required. You should not deny the possibility of server being compromised. In this case antivirus can help to identify and get rid of backdoors, web-shells, other nasty stuff. Besides antivirus additional software can be installed – like anti-rootkits, log event notifiers, etc.
