Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) SNMP Ports 161 & 162 Explained
The Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) uses two ports, namely port 161 for SNMP traps and port 162 for SNMP management information requests and responses.
SNMP is a protocol used in network management systems to monitor and manage network devices, such as routers, switches, and servers. It allows network administrators to collect and organize information about these devices, as well as remotely configure and control them.
Port 161 is used for SNMP traps, which are asynchronous notifications sent by network devices to an SNMP manager. These traps are triggered by specific events or conditions, such as a device going offline or a critical error occurring. The SNMP manager receives these traps and can take appropriate actions based on the information provided.
Port 162 is used for SNMP management information requests and responses. These are synchronous exchanges between the SNMP manager and the network devices. The manager can send requests to retrieve information from the devices, such as their current status or performance metrics. The devices respond with the requested information, allowing the manager to monitor and analyze the network.
