  I like the Frasier theory about Sisko's dad. Being that on Cheers the character of Frasier said his dad was dead, but then when they did the spinoff show we find his dad alive and well, and the explanation given in the show was they had had a horrible fight and weren't talking to the point that Frasier cut off martin, but that after his mom died they made up leading to the events of the show Frasier.
  Although the line from episode 1 "emissary" was "My father was a gourmet chef" another reading of that could be that he had temporarily retired, and Ben thought it was permanent. Just depends on how you choose to read into the line.
  Joseph Sisko uses the tube grubs in his compost bin, secretly hes using Nog to just help him control the grub population. lol
  The president was suppose to evoke a gazelle or a goat, like the gentle deer like animal of the African savannah. I think if they had gone for a tall extra thin actor it might have conveyed that better.
  We were suppose to see his horns under the turban but they never did.
  Mike you haven't seen a uniform wormhole till you see the next gen episode "Ro Laren", there is a scene where we see that same zipper in the back, and then poof she undoes a magic invisible zipper in the front.
  Sorta the whole point of the episode is that Leyton is falling into the trap of enacting the founders plan.

  That security officer you were so curious about was played by Dylan Chalfy.
  I know I'll never forget where I was when Swift canceled her show or something.
  So one of the things that I get to thinking about with this is, the idea of consent of the governed, in an idea democracy the government would only act in behalf of its people in the way that the people wish the most, but when they don't act in that way, they are acting without the consent of Us [the governed] and therefore no long represent us, but we aren't allowed to say "because you no longer represent us, you can no longer govern us", and this is one of the major problems with representative democracy even with term limitations. We are trapped with an unconsented to government as long as they still have term. In this story idea Starfleet is not only not a consented to leader, it is unelected, and Layton is trying to manipulate that to his advantage, which is something that in 1995 we had seen in places like Venezuela, Afghanistan, Chile, Cuba and others. In the USA a military coupe would be practically impossible, but a political coupe happens here regularly and we call it politics as usual now. We have slowly turned into an oligarchy that is constantly on the brink of dictatorship. If Layton had really wanted power he should have run for office, or taken over a corporation. I laugh to hide the tears.
  Also think of how even in the 80s and 90s when we were kids, adults were still like be scared of the pinko socialist commies could be anywhere trying to take your freedom, dum.dum.dum!
  Yeah sorry Mike gotta disagree with you and put a light on what Keith said, in the last couple of decades when a group of people from different views have tried to sit down and work on the questions of our society, imagine it like 6 guys playing poker, 4 of them have been serious about paying poker, 1 is throwing the chips and cards everywhere and taking a shit on the table, and the 6th guy is telling the 4 we need to hear out what the shitter has to say. and it's not working, it hasn't worked, and we need to stop giving those people a place at the table.

• People DO love the banter! Or at least, I definitely do. Whenever I see a new K&M episode drop and it's over 90 minutes long, this sparks joy. Granted, I usually watch your episodes at 1.75 or Double speed, but still! Really enjoying the Patron watch-alongs lately – it's a blast watching with the community and getting to know everyone a bit. I'm a sucker for any Trek episode that takes us back to Earth, especially when we also get to meet some of the crew's family like Grandpa Sisko here. I can't imagine this story working nearly as well as a single episode, so I'm really glad they did this one as a 2-parter to give it some time to breathe and build the paranoia. Another strong 95 stem bolts from me this week! Happy Thanksgiving and safe travels to all who are traveling. My go-to dishes are pumpkin pie, pecan pie, turkey (so cliche but so tasty), and all the mashed potatoes and gravy I can possibly muster. Happy feasting! 🖖

• I've always taken the opening bit with Dax to be there to establish that Odo is now "one of the gang" unlike in season one, in order to contrast the test of Odo's inclusivity to come.
