Stop using APT

Debian’s Package management is pretty old and archaic, so let’s fix it.

  • a problem resolution in search for a problem

  • I much prefer the way dnf supplanted yum. Why not make a better system for installing packages and replace apt? I don't use Debian but the screenshot of nala made me think of dnf.

  • 00:00 📦 Apt, commonly used in Debian-based systems, is criticized for being slow, lacking history, and reliant on third-party plugins.
01:08 🔄 Nala serves as a front-end for apt, resolving issues like slow downloads, selecting the best mirrors, maintaining a history with undo capabilities, and enhancing the installation interface.
02:30 🛠 Installing Nala involves adding the mirror and using simple commands based on your Debian version; it significantly improves the apt experience.
03:12 📈 Compared to apt, Nala's upgrade process offers clearer summaries, faster downloads, and a more user-friendly interface within the terminal.
05:01 ⏳ Nala's download interface within the terminal offers accurate time estimations, download progress, and speed details, making package installation more user-friendly.
06:14 🧹 Nala's history feature allows users to track alterations, perform undos for specific actions, and manage installations or removals efficiently.
08:00 🌐 Nala's 'fetch' feature tests and selects the fastest Debian mirrors, significantly speeding up downloads and enhancing the overall Debian experience.

  • This one is very similar to trusty old aptitude

  • i grew up with apt when i got my raspberry pi zero w when i was 9

  • It feels that you're in 1998. lol
APT is the best thing out there!

  • "I hate apt because you have to install a bunch of stuff to fix it. Here's how to install a bunch of stuff to avoid that and fix apt." Huh?

  • 0:43 That I'm not spending HOURS downloading garbage…
Geeeeeez exageration much?!?!? When you start with that level of BS, it doesn't make me want to watch the rest of this… garbage!
I'll go watch other videos to learn about the other package managers… Videos that don't whine about something else before.

  • POP-OS just let me sudo apt install nala
and it just works now, pretty neat

thanks for the head's up, for linux noobs like me 😀

  • Isn't this just lipstick on a pig? I mean it's just a fancy python script driving apt and dpkg whilst displaying things in a prettier way?
It's not faster unless you're using mirrors on the other side of the planet – which is only a case of sbk/pebkac, and uninstalling is simple as if you know what you're doing…
To someone who didn't grow up running/administrating UNIX servers and workstations (like I did since the late 80's) this surely must seem a lot friendlier – but trust me – apt-get is the shit compared to what we had on SunOS, BSD and NonStop and it's been a breeze to use ever since I started using Debian in -96!
Don't get me wrong – I truly appreciate when commands and tools are improved to provide either better information or present the information better – but no scripted front end will make the underlying bits run faster. That's just blatantly lying – but it might make installing software packages easier for linux beginners, and it will make it prettier for those who actually look at the terminal whilst installing something that I do in the background…

    So prettier – yes, faster – no… 😉

  • I've never had apt take hours, and I've never bothered with apt fast. I've got a 3 node proxmox cluster in my lab. That being said, I've been using Nala for a while now, it's fantastic.

  • Is it really so hard to make proper GUI instead of looking nice terminal? It's not 1980 anymore…

  • The real solution is to start using Pacman and Paru.

  • I've used several different distros, and have tried out the various package managers on each. Apt doesn't seem to be any worse than any of the others. I'm not sure what you're using it for, but … well, it works as well as anything else I've used.

I'll have to try out nala, see how that works out. Maybe I'm missing something.

  • at that point just use an actual gui

  • I clicked on the video expecting you to say "Use Snap". I'm so glad that's not what you said. Nala looks great! Gonna give it a shot

  • I will never forgive apt downloading the wrong swift language version and then AGAIN for ocaml and then I was done with basic apt commands after 2 hours of both pain. I thought I could flee by going to Fedora but in the end, I am back on Ubuntu (Kubuntu).

Yes, I admit this is somewhat petty but I try to avoid apt. I use flatpaks, from source or…if I can avoid it snaps.

9:45 Oh yeah, since you mentioned it. I am like 80 percent sure Apt broke my recent Pop Os experience as I did a recovery and nothing worked the same. Backed up my files and got the hell out! Might come back when cosmic and i get a new desktop, idk, this machine on it's last legs.

  • Maybe do an update of this video with Debian Bookworm ?

  • I've been using Aptitude and APT since 2000… and I will probably die using it. Never had an issue with APT, I used other package managers and they really sucked, like DNF, YUM, PACMAN, DPKG, HOMEBREW, RPM, SNAP, had issues with all of them that couldn't be solved, for instance, most of them have issues with old and new dependencies, oh man, the printers drivers… don't get me started, I won't try another one. This is like with programming languages pickle… I don't need Python, I already have a whole lot of other languages that can do the same, better, faster, prettier, cheaper.

  • I’m Windows user trying to learn Linux and this looks like giant waste of time to both learn and use.

  • You’re using the same APT as me? When you install Debian it’s let you choose a local mirror. I never experienced slowness over apt using my country’s mirror.
How many packages are you installing?
