  • many moons ago when we would build physical servers, one of the senior admins would make us install windows, run a backup, and then destroy the raid array and make sure we could get the server back before turning it over to the business unit

  • Wait until you go down the rabbit hole of virtualizing the firewall itself as a VM and dedicating appliance WAN/LAN interfaces to that VM to further isolate them away from the hypervisor.

That's a huge thing in the corporate IT world right now. Have worked on many such a server. For the most part it's stable and makes backing up and restoring the entire firewall itself a snap but only if it's done right. Really the only issue is hardware failing (disk, NIC, SFP, fiber cable, etc.).

I run a virtualized firewall at home myself and it works great…until ATT decides to update the firmware on their fiber modem and reboot it out from under me at 9am on a workday. Eventually I'm going to get that fiber hardwired into the same box running the virtualized firewall and be done with those issues.

  • Hey Tom, Do you think XCPNG will have a plugin for TrueNAS to help manage Storage Volumes or provision a new lun or etc?

  • I bet you cannot configure a TrueNAS Scale OpenVPN Client to connect to a remote pfsense firewall.

  • Just got a you tube ad for Huntress. Finally the ad algorithm is working.

  • "Untested backups are wishful thinking" -> some image showing a fantasy world. Disneyland or something.

My painful example: I had one disk backed up to a second disk. "Yay!". Years later one of those drives was failing, so I bought a much larger disk, and then without thinking it happened that I put BOTH filesystems on the same disk (since the new disk was much more than twice the size of the older disks) when re-organizing all my disks. A few years later that newer disk died, and I went to restore files … from the same disk. Oops!

  • 15:30 – I always appreciate your transparency when it comes to this kind of stuff. You're actually the first person who's ever actually specified an actual dollar amount as to what YouTubers are getting paid for the "sponsored reviews"
