The Open Source Software Revolution
Open source software has become a key driver of economic activity, community engagement, and societal impact. Consider that many of the tools used to analyze and trace Covid-19 are open source. The open source programs office (OSPO) has become a widely used construct in the private sector for managing and sharing open source software. Now, Johns Hopkins has launched the first university-based OSPO that treats open source software as a primary research object as well as created the first Institute for Applied Open Source that builds upon the OSPO to empower the use of open source software for research, education and translation into social impact. In this livestreamed presentation, Sayeed Choudhury, Associate Dean for Research Data Management and Hodson Director of the Digital Research and Curation Center at the Sheridan Libraries of Johns Hopkins University, will share how Hopkins is breaking new ground with innovative open source programs that build digital services for Baltimore community centers, novel educational programs known as semesters of code, and partnerships with other open source developers from the City of Paris.
