The Pi-Hole install EVERYONE needs!

Check out Linode! http://www.linode.com/techhut $100 – 60 day credit on new Linode accounts for TechHut viewers.

Today we are setting up our very own Pi-Hole ad blocking server, but in addition to this we will be using this as our very own recursive DNS service to add another layer of security and privacy.

  • Thank you for this tutorial. I love the content. I just discovered you and subscribed.

  • Damn, finally a tutorial on youtube regarding this subject that is 100% spot on! Tnx man!

  • Hey quick question here: Will a raspberry 1 B model with 512Mb of RAM gonna work fine with it?
    Thanks.

  • I use Cloudflare upstream DNS server to filter adult content. If I set this up, does this mean I won't be able to use Cloudflare's DNS?

  • What makes this different from just using browser extensions such as Adblock to block ads or even Brave browsers build-in ad blocker?

  • Do I just leave the router DNS set to my pihole IP or do any router settings need to be changed from a standard pihole setup to accommodate the Unbound install?

  • You have some misinformation. First, your ISP and your own web browser have their own internal DNS server/cache so you rarely ping external DNS servers if your internet browsing isn't random. Second, even if the DNS servers log your DNS request, they only know which site you're trying to access. You don't really get anything "secret" from that as your DNS server won't know anything that you do on those websites anyways because of TLS. Third, even if you host your own local DNS server, you will still need to access those TLDs from time to time which defeats your whole claim about "privacy". Forth, your ISP already has it's own DNS server so you really are grasping for straws in terms of "speeds" when you host your own DNS server within your network because querying your ISP's DNS will be basically just as quick.

  • Oh, I expected this video to include instruction how to set up PiHole on the router as well. Can you please make a video about that too?

  • Raspberry Pi is unobtainium. Time for people to stop promoting them.

  • Thank you! I went further and set my router to use that DNS under DHCP settings and BOOM!
