Before Gmail, YouTube, or Facebook, a starry-eyed rocket startup company announced a fantastical vision: a new age, where private companies send humans into space. And in August 2021, some 19 years after its founding, SpaceX and its CEO, Elon Musk, finally made good on that pledge. At SpaceX’s “Starbase” test site in the remote beach town of Boca Chica in southern Texas, workers have been laboring around the clock for days preparing for Starship’s first orbital flight. Last Friday morning, they completed one of the final and most challenging assembly steps: stacking the 150-foot-tall first stage SN20 on top of an even bigger booster, the 230-foot-tall Super Heavy B4.
WHAT DOES SN 20 MEAN TO THE SPACE INDUSTRY?
SN20 (which is short for “Serial No. 20”) is the latest in a series of prototype launches for the Starship series. SpaceX has successfully flown five upper-stage prototypes—SN8, SN9, SN10, SN11, and SN15—to 6.3 miles in the sky, and came down for a safe landing back on Earth.
The SN 20 became the milestone just as a host of private space companies were beginning to take off. Around the world, other rocket enterprises have followed suit, launching constellations of tiny satellites that will change the way we communicate and observe Earth. This Starship has now pushed into a new era, similar to how America’s railways opened the West to urban development some 150 years ago. SpaceX plans to eventually use Starship as a fully reusable, two-stage transportation system to send humans and large sets of cargo to the moon, Mars, and other distant solar system destinations. Recently, the program got a large contract win after NASA selected Starship as the crewed lander for the agency’s Artemis moon-landing effort. Under the previous Trump administration, NASA was shooting for a 2024 deadline to put boots on the surface; the new Biden administration hasn’t yet committed to a timeline.
