The Worst Possible Way To Boot Linux!

Linux allows you to do some really weird things, some things that you absolutely shouldn’t do for example booting off of a cloud drive on Google Drive and somehow it actually works.

  • Private X microblogs do make for good ACL capable kv stores with a built in search and GUI… upload limits (posting) kill you tho 😉 (yeah, some things are a shouldn't… if you have static data you can drip… no, really, don't do this. no. don't. stop.) RSS is still the king of the clear web in some ways.

  • I have to admit, one of my favorite feelings is when I am being told "you can't do that" when discussing something I am already "guilty" of.

  • Instant provisioning?
Or you could just use a NixOS config.
Plus, this is a flat filesystem.

  • Way to use 400% of your CPU. Running FUSE is not great when it's running off the internet. Better set NoAtime.
Also what if you wrote a NBD driver to connect to google drive. Using a disk image makes sense.

  • And then Google started to inject intrusive and '''''personalised'''''' adverts in Linux thanks to Google Drive's spying AI technology 😂😂😂

  • I guess Sun was right: the network is the computer
But I really wish they also added some ipxe.
But the real deal is actually: booting of IPFS, fully decentralized storage.

  • I actually predicted this would happen, I just thought it would be a mobile os that runs off of data.

  • You keep saying don't do this, but I have the distinct feeling you are telling me to do this.

  • might actually do this to see what lsblk looks like

  • run a VM who's storage and ram are on GD

  • only thing this is missing is booting from the network over PXE, without the use of a USB drive with an init binary

  • I booted a Ubuntu VM from OneDrive by accident worked tell it didn't cause the hard drive syncing well got out of sync

  • Nah, for maximum performance, you gotta boot off Google Drive, have your swap on OneDrive, and store userland data on AWS.

  • 1:40 "When I heard that a friend got Linux to boot off of NFS" – wait what… how is this even "weird"… we did that on server farm as netboot like in 2010…

  • Youtube recommended that to me, so I added it to the watch later (a.k.a. never) list, and now Brodie has a video on it.
    Cool

  • SSDs? I was thrilled back when I upgraded my 8" floppy to a 5 1/4" floppy drive.

  • The extra silly thing is this is mostly just missing caching logic and a more complete filesystem implementation to actually work. Network streaming of non-system software is already a thing.

  • Wait, all that effort and no Google Drive swapfile? What a waste of memes…

  • The only thing I could think of to match this would be to use hand-made core memory.

  • onedrive mounted on a macos vm as root.
No intention of spending time on that but would certainly be more cursed.
Actually windows vm may make things worse, pick your poison.

  • This is actually scary. I see this as the first step to 100% cloud computing where you won’t own your own computer. You will basically have a router that connects to the cloud. Its mainframes all over again but controlled by big tech partnered with the govt. I won’t partake in any such activities.

  • Well actually I was using a hard drive to boot off until a few days ago, and it was a pain, especially with the size of modern apps

  • Some weyrdos might even use a spinning plastic disc 🙂 (i am not, can't even put one of them into a reading device anymore)
