  • Using Linux I feel like a slave. A slave to the system. I can't use the programs I like, but the ones that are available. I can't choose a laptop that I like, but one that is supported. Much more often the system crashes e.g. on Manjaro a program may stop working after an update, Mint ububtu I have to reinstall every 4 years.

Meanwhile, Windows runs smoothly for years, I use the hardware I want and the programs I want.

Do you like being a slave to hardware and software? Choose Penguin. You like the world, you have broad interests choose better Windows or macOS.

  • the best way to use windows only apps on linux is…don't. use a vm, with gpu pass through anddd use windows apps in windows, when you are done working switch to linux again. the only thing is that in my expirience you have to know a little bit what you are doing appart from following instructions, as an example i found a pretty good tutorial that was fine until the last version of some scripts didn't work and some gpu something dump wasn't working for me so i had to make the same steps but from boot without starting the desktop environment

  • Makes me wonder if the MSI- installer file is checking the FAT, and it sees EXT3 or EXT4 , and the installer grinds to a halt ???
    What say you all ??

  • I have 10GB'S of game installs. Is it possible to detect these games in Linux Steam client?

  • It's interesting to see how much the installers for Adobe and Microsoft products rely so heavily on online services – which seems to be the problem with both here. It seems to me that this is deliberate – they want you to be stuck in their ecosystem and not to have any freedom. Personally, that's an approach that I don't want to sign on to (sic). If they need to force you to do things their way that much, then they've lost sight of having a focus on a quality user experience, and have moved to the "extractive" phase, where you add the user are seen as nothing more than a source of constant revenue.

That's always followed by becoming objectively worse, and usually signals that you're past the point of the last good version. Microsoft Office is definitely there, but I haven't used Adobe in long enough to know, but for me, the writing was on the wall when they went to a subscription-only model.

The good news for Linux users is that there products won't get better any more, but they will get worse – meaning that there's opportunity for the Free versions to catch up (though we need viable alternatives, and some of these products are extremely big and complex programs).

Still, for most users that aren't doing things professionally, there's no need for these tools, as the free stuff is just as good for the everyday user.

  • Solution = VMWARE or any virtual machine + windows (install whatever you want there 🙏)

  • I imagine many people have written this already, but microsoft really has no reason to support office on linux. In fact, I suspect that they sabotage it, so that you need windows to properly run their software.

  • As much as I love how fast Linux is moving on the desktop, I'm worried that before too long big tech is going to find some way to start disrupting. The rumor of MSFT buying Steam is just a rumor, but an example of how a key piece taken off the board could be a massive setback.

  • I was just having this black screen error with Amazon Music w/ Wine on Arch. Never figured out how to fix it. I gave up on it. It would show the log in screen for half a second and then turn to a all white or black blank screen. That's after installing Amazon Music with Wine and trying to launch the application.

  • You have proven that Adobe is actively making their products unfriendly to Linux.

  • Office 365 probably ties into a lot of microsoft services since it looks at what account is signed in etc. even mail linking.

  • You should've also tested CrossOver because it works great for Office 365 for me

  • I am thisclose to switching over to Linux completely on my oersonal machines as well. Only problem is terrible support for my 144hz monitor on Nvidia

  • Luckily I don't use adobe but bottles has worked for all the windows software that I use

  • Since Windows is such a different OS than Linux, why don't we use MacOS version of software? Since MacOS is Unix based and has a similar file structure style, doesn't it make more sense to use MacOS native apps rather than Windows?

  • I still dont get why linux doesnt just implement a way to use executables directly without having to go through all the wine bs. Is exe copywrited or something?

  • The 555 nvidia driver should fix wayland issues, not sure if this works for 10x or green with envy tho

  • Hi, The W2KSP4_EN.EXE dependency for atmlib was failing and the website was posting a timeout issue. After checking our your comment, I thought that it might be some isp level blocking of that site. I tried a vpn and was able to install it.

  • Office 365 code is setup to access APIs that are currently not written in to Wine yet. They are too proprietary. 365 is a data collector anyway; why would anyone want that on their Linux system in the first place?

  • It does feel like a lot of programs that don't install would indeed work fine, if their installers weren't broken.
These installers must be doing some very esoteric things for Wine to not work with them.

  • Use WINE, bottles and Lutris. Highly suggest Nobara Linux for out of the box support for many Windows applications.

  • Well fiest of all you all did it wrong second of all photoshop works and adobe illustrator too

  • Wouldn't a professional user shell out some bucks for CrossOver instead of fiddling with bottles?

  • PulseEffects sounds interesting. I recently bought a Epos B20 which is great to me but even the company's website no longer seems to host their Windows only software to fine tune things.
Found out about NoiseTorce quickly which is hosted on Github and also supports Pipewire natively. It cuts out background noise and other things like me typing and I am really happy with it.
CoreCtrl doesn't cut it for me however. I love that it looks like AMD's official software but to undervolt and optimize my Graphics Card, I have much better results with LACT which looks pretty boring but also gets the job done. Either way I'm happy there's indeed software for such scenarios and that Microsoft's office suite for those who need it at least has a online version.

  • I cannot move to Linux fully until Photoshop and Illustrator works well on Linux. Almost everything else like Office has very good alternatives whether thats in the browser or things like LibreOffice.

Things like Inkscape and especially GIMP just arn’t as good or as easy to use, and haven’t been adopted in actual industries. Im not super techy either, so while I like using Linux, I like using it as a designer and regular computer usage, not as a developer .

  • i use linux mint with kde plasma its great i love it but sometimes i miss the easy and smooth windows expirience i dont use any programs proffesionaly but what if i will in the future ?

  • I think Adobe CC is the big one. There are no viable professional alternatives on Linux (with the exception of DaVinci perhaps). Office is much less of an issue, because there are for most use cases, and Microsoft is moving as much as it can to Office 365 anyhow. There are still some hurdles (complex Excel sheets being the main one), but you can get by mostly.

  • I need office for professional use. It has to be MS Office because none of the alternatives that run on Linux function in the same way and have issues with spreadsheets the most. That makes the OS completely unusable for me. And ti amke matters worse, i do need professional edtiong software like Photoshop. Although i use Affinity, but that doesnt have a Linux version either.

Over and underclocking can be quite important as well. For example, I've underclocked my CPU so now it uses 40% less power for 95% of the performance. Which means lower thermals and a reduced power bill.

  • When I switched over to Linux I was all about trying to run Windows programs, but whenever I need to run Windows now, I have the opposite problem lol

  • I think we need to have a community for wine scripts. That way, everyone can pool in the solutions to make it work. BTW, there is also DARLING, which aims to make macos softwares work like wine!
