This Notes App is SO Close!

Today I talk about Beaver notes, a note-taking app that is almost good. Has a few flaws, but it has potential.

  • 5:11 I'm sure the code block is equal to the triple back tick in markdown (“`…“`) while the inline code is equal to one back tick (`…`) in markdown

  • Soon, Matt will be running Debian and Emacs. Or Emacs and Guix…

  • Windows has Sticky Notes and leaving one machine to another is very challenging to take your notes with you.

  • Seems very undercooked. The parser is buggy and no password masking. Looks more like an alpha product at this stage

  • Damn, it looks almost the ticket but the markdown issue would drive me nuts

  • Beaver Notes seems to offer less than Google Keep – with one exception: Markdown.

  • I`m in the same page… Using Google Keeps, but don`t want to… Beaver does not have Android App, so is another one that I can not use.

  • Why not Obsidian, you can make it complex or simple. Also can sync files with syncthing or use their paid feature. Has support for all platforms AFAIK. It has a lot of features but I like note linking and graph view the most. only thing that is missing is password protected notes but there could be a plugin for that I don't know other than that everything this app has obsidian has too and more.

  • Curious if you've fried Obsidian, and if so, what issue(s) you had with it?

  • Seems like a cut down/simplified version of obsidian…could be nice for people being overwhelmed by obsidian and/or don't need all the features.

  • I've pretty much given up on digital note taking. Most of the offerings are either resource-guzzling Electron apps (like this app) or just something text-based like Org Mode or just using plain old markdown files. There are also some native GUI apps like Zim, QOwnNotes or Vnote, all of them have some features which I like but they all have some quirks which drives me up the wall.

I'm sort of settled on Obsidian, because at least its web and desktop versions are more similar than other Electron-based note taking apps. I also use Orgzly mainly just for its notification feature, and Notally because I like its minimalist interface and the ease of making shopping lists in it, but there's the lack/deficiencies of their sync feature.

  • i use obsidian just because it's in md and stored locally, just making github copy every time i change something

  • I've continued my hunt for a better note/list app after using Obsidian because Obsidian on android is very…finnicky, to say the least

  • I use QOwnNotes since a month ago, I had been using Obsidian but it bothered me a little that it's not FOSS and you depend too much on Addons, which may not help in case they get lost or something.

I can use the same format Obsidian uses, but with most functions built-in or just create a small script, plus I love markdown and the independence that comes with it 🙂

  • Have you tried Joplin? I remember Steve mentioning setting up Joplin Server a while back on the podcast..

  • Is it me ore does Beaver notes just look like a cut down version of Logseq ?

  • I think it would be great to do an overview of note taking apps, BUT comparing them specifically to Google Keep. Because, let's face it, especially when it comes to Linux users, that's the product a lot of us are using, because it's stable, it's simple and it's accessible from any device. And that trio of features seems something no one can truly replicate.

  • I hope you don't hate talking about this, but your speaking abilities has evolved so much since I started following you 👍keep up the good work

  • I never had a need for a dedicated 'making notes' app, but when I had to brainstorm I was using MindMap-style applications to map out the areas, and then just fill-in the blanks. And if I make notes to learn and memorise something (e.g. for AWS certifications) I make my notes with a fountain pen. Yes, slower. Yes, more involved. But the flip-side of this is, I engage more areas of my brain and that actually helps me memorising things (diversifying sensory input also helps if you have OCD btw). I discovered Obsidian recently, and it really speed up my documentation creation process. Really cool app as it combines notes (markdown) with mind-map functionality.

  • I personally enjoy having both code blocks and inline code. Inline code is handy for highlighting a variable name mid paragraph. Then code blocks are handy for chunks of code, with line numbering etc
Thanks for sharing this! Though I’ll stick with Joplin for now which has a slefhostable server (afaik syncthing doesn’t work on iOS)

  • i use multiple note apps, i don't like putting all of my eggs in one basket.

  • Just came to this video from a CPU making tutorial! What a change! XD

  • I'm a note taking fanatic, I have 4 note pads with a pen each around the house. I also have notes on the computer and phone. The key is to review all notes and get those things done, and then get rid of notes, that are no longer needed. Because if I don't, it would become a confusing mess.
