Top 5 Ubuntu Alternatives

Ubuntu is a great distro, but they also do some things that cause some people to not want to use the distro, and I myself have some concerns. In that light, there are many other distributions to try out, and this is my list of distros that are good alternatives to the new Linux user.

  • Thanks for showing alternatives on Ubuntu.
I have Ubuntu 22 now and it works fine. Snaps (updates) and sometimes App/Software applications fail. You need the command prompt to overrule and fix the sh*t.
But I still like the basis, it almost never crash and it can run offline too.

  • Distros-
    1) Linux mint
    2) Manjaro
    3) MX Linux
    4) elementary os
    5) solus

  • After starting with Mint years ago i'm mainly on Pop!_OS these days. 🙂

  • there are so many distros and user interfaces out there, it's like how do you choose? How come there are so many?!

  • thx for the video, always nice to give comparisons.
please use a lavalier microphone. people get scared when you scream at them ;o)

  • I am now currently using Manjaro for about a month. I have to say after watching this, I am interested in trying MX linux and Solus. I tried Mint and Feren before but I don’t like them because they way too much like Windows while I want to learn to use something that is difference from Windows.

Elementary was the first linux that attracted my attention, but it does not free (at least not have a free version available for me at the time) and I feel like if I am gonna mess around or experimenting something, I don’t want to just buy it right away and spend the rest of my time unable to install it either in virtual box or along side with Windows because at that time I was totally new to pretty much everything about installing a new os let alone navigating it.

Now I have some request. Can you make a recommend video of linux distros that is fast and moderately easy to use for a not totally new to linux user who know some basic command line? Or distros that easy to maintain while the user can learn to use command line or should know how to use it. I don’t mean you can’t learn it in Mint, I’m just looking for something that not as easy as Mint because it gives me the feeling of I don’t really need to learn command line because it does not neccessary because everything beside command line is easy. And as much as learning command line is challenging enough to keep my attention, jumping into Arch right away might be a bit overwhelming. I guess one choice is ubuntu, but I also looking for ubuntu alternative. Most importantly, it should be fast. I was so amazed and surprise how fast Manjaro and Arcolinux installation time takes. Not sure how long, but one thing I am certain of was it took less than 1 hour and the system inside is fast enough for me.

  • What a about Pop! OS? I think it is what Ubuntu should be

  • Is Xubuntu a good alternative to Ubuntu, or is it pretty much the same? If Xubuntu is equal to Ubuntu, then is OpenSuse a good alternative, concerning Leap version for xfce desktop?

  • I fall in love super fast with a distro if it's: *(1 – very important; 5 – less important)

    1. Up to date & Rolling release
    2. Usable & Stable
    3. Beautiful & customizable
    4. Fast & Furious :))…aaaimean..flawless
    5. Not based on…which himself is based on… & It must bring something NEW on the table

Result: Solus or Void. I'm scared of Void (for the moment) so I choose Solus! I have to confess that I opened the terminal only from curiosity…and now i want to learn Bash scripting…or fish…idonno :))

  • For me the best one is not in your list. Deepin. Good video. ..Congrats

  • At 6:02 and 9:59 there is the MEWE again but didn't you say you leave mewe? But From those I Personally like Manjaro the most

  • I hear a lot about Manjaro crashing when updating with the GUI based tools. Why do they even have the GUI update option if it's so risky?

  • My main reason for using Ubuntu (on my dedicated HTPC) is that it's the only officially supported distro for Kodi Media Center. It's possible to use it on other distros, but it's more of a community supported thing. LibreELEC would be more ideal, but I need a full web browser and a couple other things too.

  • What I recommend for new comers to Linux is either Linux Mint or MX Linux. If they are tech savvy, I recommend them Fedora. I never recommend them Ubuntu and discourage them from going to Ubuntu.

  • The issues I have with MX Linux 18 is that it doesn't support Snapd (Snap Packs) but it does support Flatpaks (Flathub) I was able to download and use Minecraft but was unable to install and run Steam do to a missing 32 bit library, the thing is I wanted to like MX Linux but they still got a ways to go

  • 3 years mint on my main machine, some time with Lubuntu and Peppermint on my old netbook. I've seen in 3 years a huge leap forward for Linux. Proton came in, LibreOffice got better, Mesa drivers got better, Mint got better (except 19.2 update came with some issues). My only disappointment is: Ubuntu is the base of these, and since that hint at completely dropping support for 32 bits, than backing off, they make me worried. Than Lubuntu 19.04 was more demanding for old Laptops, it made me worried again since it's officially sponsored by Ubuntu… My hope is in Linux Mint Debian edition… As for the list, I still do not like the frequency of rolling releases of kernels since it reminds me of windows updates.. I like my OS to be like a table I put my dishes on than get busy with eating the dishes, not fixing the damned table!

  • The new centos 8 is missing a lot of ip utilities like dig and finger. is there one big package that installs them all?

  • I followed your recommendation months ago and installed Mint. You have become my guide as I work toward breaking away from Windows completely because I do not want Windows 10. So, thank you Tom.

  • That Mint iso hack has kind of pushed me away from it.

  • What’s the story behind the Forensics cap? And thanks for your videos, they’re very helpful to Linux noobs like me 😜
