Touring Burco Academy of Science and Technology- (June 2021)
On June 23rd, 2021. I have visited Burco Academy of Science and Technology. It is a co-ed boarding school which is located in the outskirts of the city of Burco, in Togdheer province.
The school uses American curriculum. Student grade levels range from 7-12. The admission criteria is highly selective (academically) thus they produce high quality students, but they accommodate students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. The school itself is located on a donated land, and the President has told me that the Burco Academy’s community heavily engages in local volunteering services. I didn’t ask the per pupil average cost, but it is reasonable to assume it was not significant. Although the school’s classroom facilities were on par with the developed world, the dormitories and other common areas were less than ideal. Restrooms for instance needed considerable repairs and the bunk beds in one of the residential halls were very worn out. It is amazing to see despite their financial challenges, they have managed to provide high quality education. In particular, as part of their curriculum, graduates of this school will earn their Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), which is a widely-recognized IT certification for professionals who are beginning their IT careers.
The school has about $15,000 budget shortfall in this fiscal year. They need urgent support by the end of June, 2021. Details of how to be part of this worthy project are found in their website:
