Bazzite is a Linux distro that mimics the Steam Deck OS to a T. I was not expecting how much I would like the Steam Deck experience on a powerful Windows handheld…

No I just keep my steamdeck for a steamdeck and if I want steam deck OS on my ROG Ally which I do quite a lot I have steam set to open in big picture mode which is indistinguishable from my Steamdeck really. I like having windows co's lots more games and it doesn't bother me using windows as am used to it on my gaming PC and tbh I hardly use windows on my ROg Ally just when i need to install mods or something I usually use Armoury crate 1.5 which is awesome or steam OS Big picture mode.
just buy a steam deck
Hopefully Asus is or does get directly involved in funding Bazzite maintainer and makes it an official option at sale point in the future. The work done on Bazzite is wonderful and funding a generic pc handheld OS that isn't terrible AND ISN'T WINDOWS BASED feels like an increasingly important thing in this space.
Careful with dual booting on one ssd, there is a non-zero chance one of the operating systems will just randomly dissappear and all of your data with it to never be accessible again
How much more performance do you get compared to SD besides higher res?
Turning a ASUS ROG Ally into a Legion Go is better.
I think installing Linux on a Windows handheld makes about as much sense as installing Windows on a Steam Deck. I usually hear a lot of complaints about Windows, while at the same time being told to ignore the quirks of a Linux-based OS, of which very much exist and have witnessed quite a few. They both suck in their own way. Windows-based handhelds needs a long and exhausting process to setup your library. Linux handhelds, while having Steam already setup and ready to go, the Linux experience is equally long and exhausting when you want to play games outside your Steam library or need to troubleshoot (which amounts to Googling forums and hoping someone else solved your problem).
I've struggled with both platforms for enough time to say end of the day I think I'd rather have a weirdly shaped laptop for the extra compatibility with games.
I'm curious – can you use you steam game files in both win and steam os or do you need to install it 2nd time on windows? (eGPU)
Btw I've got Ally (1st) and LeGo and Windows is sometimes making me mad 😀 So it's a really nice option to try 🙂
I bought a used original and barely ever used ROG Ally (not the "X") for half the price of a new Ally X, didn't like it too much on Windows either but was mostly ok with it because the Steam Deck lacks some horsepower and screams for a hardware upgrade after these years. I gave Bazzite a try when I was upgrading the SSD to 2 TB anyway. What a difference – it's literally a game changer! Windows is still there, but I didn't boot it again since. With Chiaki the Ally is also a great PS Portal replacement to play PS5 games remotely on a handheld – this is where I run the EA titles that would otherwise require Windows for their "AntiCheat" p.i.t.a.
Funny how the thing that's holding Windows handhelds back is Windows
This was a great video! I'm enjoying Bazzite on the original ROG Ally.
Wait, so windows sucks for a handheld? Who'd thunk?
That transparent Steam Deck case 😍
Is it an aftermarket case or was this an option from Valve?
Bro, why you choose Windows 11 as second boot option?)
Win11 is horribly bloated with background processes that truly eat your battery when you not even running any games, it also living own life and changing some settings in system which breaks some things in OS time to time. I still don't understand why people choose Win11 for gaming if it has less fps since tons of background processes that shows AD, collecting information to target ADs and it's all in paid version of Windows!
I switched back to Win 10 since it's truly has more FPS and it has less background processes running, i did cut out every trash i didn't need from my Windows 10 image and it's running smoothly.
As for handhelds unbloated Windows 10 is a true "must have")
Me watching this entire video knowing darn well I can't afford to buy this. Still a great video regardless!
I rather pay more to have access to all games even the ones not supported by steam deck
This is just another bit of info that makes me continue to feel like all of these handheld devices are just really nice prototypes for the REAL thing to get which will be the Steam Deck 2 and the ROG Ally 2. They're both refining both their software and build quality now so once there's a truly "next gen" chip available for these devices they will absolutely KILL IT.
To boot into windows instead of holding volume down, press volume up, it will take you directly to boot option and you just have to select which OS you want to boot without having to go to the BIOS, you can also set in the bios the default OS you want to boot every time you reboot.
The fact that Linux runs windows games the same or sightly better than windows through a compatibility layer says a lot about how badly windows runs XD.
Nice video
