Ubuntu 23.04 Full Review – An Attempt was Made

Ubuntu 23.04, codenamed the “Lunar Lobster” is here, and along with it comes Linux kernel 6.2 and GNOME 44. While it’s certainly nice to be able to check out the latest GNOME desktop, this release instead ends up being a good example of why non-LTS Ubuntu releases should generally be avoided.

  • I always use the LTS version so maybe this doesn't apply, but I have used Ubuntu for years and have never had any problems installing. It has never crashed except when I probably caused it. What is up with all his problems?

  • Can you specify if possible what video card and other specs you have on your machine presenting this installation?

  • Wiped a windows 11 tablet and put on 23.04. The installer was flipped on it's side but worked normal. The installed os was upright. All the features work good including the pen. Ubuntu software center always loses it's ability to report installed software or search for apps after these features initially work fine. Installing the updates resolved the issue so whatevs.

  • but its nice bro
and its now updated to bro and now im just thinking to install it in my primary drive bro

  • bro before watching this tutorial i just tried 23.04 now but i didn't installed it till now bro please try it before installing it so it will scales correctly and while trying it and whene you completed trying it there is a option to install it bro

  • I am having a bug in my Ubuntu 23.04 installation since I installed Anydesk remote desktop. I cannot open more than 4 tabs in any browser (Firefox, Chrome, Edge, Brave, etc.), and the minimize and maximize buttons do not work in any browser.

  • I just installed 23.04 on my desktop next to Windows and it had a couple minor hiccups, but it's fine. Scaling thing could be nice if it was granular instead of stuck at certain percentages.

  • I was very disappointed in 23.04, having a 7900XTX, the out of the box install has no GPU optimizations and only uses kernel 6.2 (when other distros are on 6.4.6 like Pop_OS) games ran horrible as a result of the outdated kernel and a lack of GPU optimizations. 23.04 came out 4-5 months after this card released…….the bare minimum expectation is to have proper support for hardware that came out BEFORE the distro did.

  • I had issues installing but I love this release simply because of pipewire which has aptx out of the box. I couldn't get pipewire to work properly on 22.04.

  • vs code is not working in ubuntu 23.04 how to fix?

  • You are so correct about Ubuntu. It is the worst choice of the many Linux distros. What's interesting is that Linux Mint is far superior to Ubuntu yet it's built on Ubuntu.

  • Ubuntu has always been my number one go OS, unfortunately, I was disappointed too. The installer won't even start.

  • The installer bug is still an issue todate! Unbelievable! Ubuntu teams need to fix this asap!

  • I use Ubuntu MATE and LTS and currently on 22.04. An issue I had at install is even though I was installing to a blank NVMe, I had to manually set up all the disk partitions. When I installed 19.10 I didn't have to do this. I thought that was a bit strange. And I had an issue with it taking a long time when I didn't first create the partitions.

  • Come on man, it JUST released at the time, just give it some time

  • Even after 4 months I tried installing it today and was not able to install it cause the installer kept crashing

  • How told you that you need to get excited with something as trivial as software? This is so sad…

  • Thanks for your honest review. I didn't have any of the issues you had. The issue I had was upgrading to 23.04. I ran into the black screen with the blinking cursor in the top left hand corner. I got around it by re-installing 22.04 but un-checked the boxes for full install, added software and propriety stuff during the installation. Once installed I updated everything and changed the software updater to receive updates for new versions and rebooted. The update went fine, no issues, then I installed the Nvidia driver. Working like a charm. It is a bit of a long way round, but everything is installed again and without any issues.

  • I’m still running 20.04 and love it. I played with 22.04 and didn’t like it. 23.04 looks promising but I just can’t let my 20.04 go.

  • I installed the Ubuntu 23.04 today on August 6 2023 on VirtualBox. At the first installation the setup crashed I did a simple reboot. Second time the installer installed the OS normally. Got working Ubuntu 23.04 very nicely.

  • Installed on Asus Expertbook last week with no problems. I ditched snap and installed flat, it runs fantastic, and battery life is way better than Fedora 38 and Debian 12. Im staying here for a while.

  • I'm so glad I'm not the only one having these issues with the 23.04. My Proxmox install just works, but Ubuntu 23.04 keeps crashing. I can't help but wonder if them dropping ZFS on root is related to their new push to SAAS.

  • Honest question: I'm starting Odin Project, and make a dual boot on my Windows computer (Ryzen 7).
Odin recommends the Ubuntu, but TODAY Ubuntu is "snaping" away from Debian.
Would Debian be a better system, to learn to code? I believe when they write the recommendation, Ubuntu was more IN SYNC with Debian!

  • I switched from 22.04 to 23.04 and i'm amazed. That's all i can say. Much faster, and this version is in my humble opinion a bit faster even then linux mint cinnamon 21.1. I tried it before installing 23.04. But mint is also amazingly fast, differences are minor, i switched to 23.04 because of font rendering and i didn't regret it. Amazing tool / amazing software!

  • Hi, Jay. The installer bug can be solved by right clicking on the desktop icon and choosing the “Launch with dedicated graphics card” option, or atleast that’s how I fixed it, they REALLY need to iron things out, fix bugs etc. I suspect the installer problem is caused by Nvidia cards. (ofc. Nvidia is Nvidia that’s why!)

  • Why I have the issue of "preparing Ubuntu" Running indefinitely

  • the problem with the installer is why i gave up using the gnome desktop in favour of the cinnamon desktop.

  • xubuntu 23.04 perfect! Easiest zfs install ever.

  • I still can’t install it using the new installer. I downloaded a version with old installer. Only issue is during boot messages and grub are huge. 22.10 and 22.04 text on boot is 1920×1080.

  • I was running 22.04 and having the occasional crash/lock, moved to 23.04 and it persisted for a few weeks, but now – 23.04 is absolutely rock solid running on 4 different machines, Firefox much faster too, zero other problems so far.

  • hmm, I've installed on 2 bare metal machines and vmware and also proxmox and didn't have any problems that you listed. I hope you haven't just slammed Ubuntu since your switch to Debian. That would be as bad as what Ubuntu and RHEL have done to us, stay positive Jay, i love your show.

  • Hi Jay, I haven't had any issues installing or using Ubuntu 23.04. It's been very stable and responsive on my laptop. Most of the reviews on YouTube have been overwhelming positive (including many of the comments on this video). I would recommend this release.

  • Wish I had seen this a day ago cause I finally gave up. I was actually starting to have a poor experience on 22.04 – on a machine that's been running the same hardware since at least 18.04 without any problems. I thought 23.04 would improve it… guess not

  • I installed Ubuntu 23.04 on two of my computers with absolutely no issues. Smooth and easy. I liked everything about this release.

  • My installer didn't crash. It simple vanished after putting in all the details. Eyo nope, and was never seen again.

  • Great review! Thanks for sharing!

  • This review doesnt feel genuine, nor relevant to the average user experience. The complaints seem very one-sided as an experienced user. Try to look from the eyes of the uneducated users.

  • Once a Ubuntu hater, always a Ubuntu hater. I've read plenty of comments below where folks have had no problems with this release. The fundamental problem Jay has with Ubuntu is that it isn't Fedora! Ubuntu releases always have their niggles but are always ready to use out of the box for most users. You really can't say that for Fedora. There's a reason people felt a need to develop Nobara linux…From Nobara's site: "The Nobara Project, to put it simply, is a modified version of Fedora Linux with user-friendly fixes added to it. Fedora is a very good workstation OS, however, anything involving any kind of 3rd party or proprietary packages is usually absent from a fresh install. A typical point and click user can often struggle with how to get a lot of things working beyond the basic browser and office documents that come with the OS without having to take extra time to search documentation."

  • Thanks for this. Parked on 22.10 until they fix their sh*t.

  • It's been 2 months since updating to 23.04, and besides the installer issue, it's been the best Ubuntu release so far. 24.04 will be a greap LTS release.
