Ubuntu 24.04 Flavours: Kubuntu, Budgie, MATE, Cinnamon & More

Official Ubuntu flavours add an alternative desktop or applications to regular Ubuntu, but remain backed by the full Ubuntu archive for packages and updates. This video reviews all 10 official flavours of Ubuntu 24.04 — Edubuntu, Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu Budgie, Ubuntu Cinnamon, Ubuntu Kylin, Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu Studio, Ubuntu Unity & Xubuntu.

  • I love cinnamon mint. Thanks for your hard work Peter always enjoy new learning from a grate Professor EC Peter

  • I usually use Arch, but watching this video makes me want to try Ubuntu…

  • Kubuntu 24.04 is a disaster! It would not work with the Mullvad VPN GUI, and the screen flickered constantly!

  • Another great video! I'm in the middle of backing up my WIN data so I can make the switch to linux. I was planning on going to Mint but in the past I really liked Kubuntu. Now I don't know which to use 🙂

  • You forgot to mention MATE's classic menu, which I think makes it stand out from the other distros.

  • The April 2024 edition of Ubuntu, is like seeing Coat of Arms. Just my own thought, btw 😅

  • I still use Lubuntu a lot .. it is super fast on old hardware with z-RAM in use. Also recently tried AntiX which is nice but fiddly. The latest version of Peppermint OS is pretty good to and well worth one of your in-depth reviews.

  • Thanks for the run down. I would be interested in a similar video on RPM based Linux distributions if you were to ever make one.

  • Cinnamon has always been my personal preference. The cool desktop switcher and a fairly traditional type of desktop.

Never ever liked Unity. Never will.

  • Ubuntu Studio looks good for Video, Graphics and Audio productivity.

  • After watching one of Christopher's EC videos on Linux Mint Cinnamon Edition I decided to trial Linux Mint Cinnamon on an under utilised high-end laptop from 2017. Since I installed LM I have become familiar with its desktop environment, so it's become my preferred desktop. Another reason why I like Linux Mint Cinnamon Edition, it based on an earlier Ubuntu release it's very stable and operates flawlessly with long term support, unfortunately the Gigabyte Aorus laptop I am using has unique hardware, such as twin graphics cards (SLI) Overclockable CPU, and backlit Keyboard which isn't supported by Linux Mint or any other Linux distro to my knowledge.

  • My personal favourite of Linux is ubunto studio or Kubuntu, though Linux doesn't give a great audio as windows does

  • You definately do the best videos. I have just linked a person from a windows channel who wanted to see about different flavours of linux to your channel and said "these videos are very informative"

  • Showing RAM & cpu usage 👉🏻 each & every flavour of Ubuntu, (which is helpful for viewers )

  • we all wish to buy OEM Linux Laptop or Desktop which will work good out of box

  • Greetings, Christopher. I recently installed Ubuntu Budgie on a 15 year old desktop with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 6gb of ram. Even with the rather dated hardware, the distro runs quite well, and makes for a very good spare workshop desktop for web surfing and streaming. I have run live ISO files of most of the available Ubuntu flavors, and find Ubuntu MATE and Xubuntu to also be quite nice on old hardware.

  • I used to be a Ubuntu MATE user, but I've gone over to Debian (MATE), as I wanted to avoid snap. Lubuntu appears interesting for this reason, although I really like the MATE desktop. I wish 26.04 will abandon snap – that might make me consider returning in the future

  • this was neat to watch even though i have never tried linux in any capacity. i've considered it but always assume the extra set up and install requirments are too much hastle for me and i don't know the process behind it. but seeing how comfortable the layouts are, i guess for daily use it works well, and seeing it's more responsive than windows is a plus because my laptop is getting old

  • Can I request a video? Topic is installing Linux distros alongside Secure Boot. Maybe you could show a way for beginners to generate keys and sign bootloaders. It would be appreciated, thank you.

  • Hello Christopher.
Are you having that reaction from MATE because it reminds you of Ubuntu 7.04?
I still remember the logon sound…
To me, 7.04 was the gateway into the Linux world, so I remind it fondly!

  • Awesome video. I had "figure out the differences between the versions of Ubuntu and pick one" on my list, and you just saved me hours of research and trial and error. Just from watching your video, I immediately vibed with Budgie, so I think I'll give that one a try in a VM. 🙂

  • I have a drive with ventoy and test out the different distros. linux mint is best out of the box for new people to linux. I like Ubuntu Studio.

  • 10 years Ubuntu user to OpenSuse 🥰 easy migration

  • wait?! every time i've helped someone install kubuntu, we get the ugly breeze global theme. there's an ACTUAL kubuntu theme?

  • Very interesting, thanks, but I'm sticking with Mint Cinnamon. The last thing I want is a screen full of giant icons whenever I want to open a program. Just text in alphabetical order, out of the way, with no animations.
