  • You might like Kubuntu especially people who need a SteamOS it's very stable and LTS so far I am enjoying it and COULD switch over but I got Linux Mint dual booted.

  • Wayland needs to get everywhere if it stands a chance at replacing Xorg. Transition will definitely be rocky, but who's not expecting that.

  • Wayland is great development code name but it needs to adopt X12 already

  • mfw i ran up an arch instance to check out 555 on the 15th, finally said fuck it i'll come back for 560 and reclaimed the drive for games only for 555 to drop the same day and i find out about it one day later. heck.

  • Am I the only one who can't notice a difference between x11 and wayland? All these stuttering/flickering issues I've never encountered any of them

  • 555 seems to have fixed the flicker in every game ive tried and the weird issue in cyberpunk where it would display old frames and kind of rubber band every once and a while.

  • I'm looking to switch to Linux… Is Ubuntu still a good choice? I've been browsing around and Ubuntu seems to get a lot of hate these days. I think mainly because of something called Snaps? Otherwise I have my eye on OpenSuse Slowroll. I tried Gnome and hated it, so at least I've narrowed down my DE choices haha. KDE…. or maybe the new Cosmic

  • Maybe I should give 555 a try soon.
The reason I'm still on 535 is that with my 4070 the 550 driver does support my three Monitor setup. It either does not boot or if I connect the third Monitor while running can't shutdown afterwards. Someone at Nvidia must have thought nobody uses three Monitors for sure 🙄. At least 535 on X11 works for me without any major problems so far.

  • What if the mir on the desktop dream is still alive 😀

  • Arch The Tinkerer
    Fedora The Pioneer
    Ubuntu The Stabilizer

  • Ubuntu is not the rock solid distro you project.

First the push their own technology such as MIR, upstart, snaps, etc . These projects are often less polished than anything Fedora releases. They often fail.

The Ubuntu developers are notorious for not working with the greater Linux community, both upstream and Debian. There was a huge rift. He is the supreme dictator after all. It took years for the Ubuntu community / developers to repair the damage and work with Debian.

When their pet projects fail, they are then years behind as is the case for Wayland.

Wayland was enabled by default in late 2017, but the implementation was poorly done, and they reverted to xorg. Back to default in 2021, and then back to xorg. Now back to Wayland.

This is far from Fedora. Fedora has been Wayland by default with gnome since 2016, kde in 2021, never had to revert, and xorg was available if someone had or wanted to revert.

In this respect Fedora continues to contribute to upstream more than Ubuntu, fix Wayland bugs much faster than Ubuntu, and has a much better track record of rolling Wayland out as smoothly and easily as possible.

  • Ive just been using Nouveau on my system76 laptop. I'll give the new proprietary ones a try eventually!

  • Carl of System76 stated that Nvidia 555 was what they were waiting for. COSMIC kinda has to wait for this release before they can properly ship 24.04 of Pop_OS.

  • Hey, can you make subtitles to your great videos? It's now just klik klik klik from the settings. Then it's also possible to make translations for multiple languages very easily. But if you just make subtitles with english, the automatic translation for finnish will works perfectly. That is amazing.

  • I've yet to see a good (proposal) implementation of global shortcuts.
None of them so far allow to:
    * bind shortcuts to mouse buttons
    * bind shortcut to one modifier key only
    * have overlapping global shortcuts for different applications

Until this is unresolved, i find them useless in my only use case: VoIP applications for muting/speaking/push-to-talk

  • Question is not about NVidia and wayland but about wayland itself. It is totally broken on AMD and Intel as well as on NVidia. Also it is like king Midas but little different: it breaks everything it touches and then it shouts "NVidia f*ck you".

  • I hate Wayland, in the actual sense of the word hate, being more than technically prejudicial, or merely biased. It is an opinionated solution, not very pragmatic, and barely general purpose to do what it must do. On the other hand xorg is guilty of the opposite, and so this isn't me advocating xorg. No, this is a classical dilemma where we have two bad situations. For me, i have a list of requirements that currently work in xorg that i cannot sacrifice, despite the problems with xorg, in balance the trade-off is acceptable. But that list is shrinking, and i hope goes to zero. But that's how xorg got to where it is today, decades of specific hacks for added, and we repeat that now again. So i think xorg could be fixed with extreme, breaking things kinda fixing. But it's probably too late. One of the last things i requires is global hot keys, my f12 button triggers Tilix or Terminator to drop down a terminal like in quake with tildke ~ key. For whatever reasons that specific feature is not allowed on purpose by current Wayland implementation. Gnome in Fedora will not allow the key binding.

  • Im on windows because of Wayland not working well enough for me, and X being a mess…

  • Also, Jedi Survivor doesn't work for me, so gaming doesn't always just work 😁

  • So happy about the beta driver! Tested it and it fixes the issue it is targeting so I can now run linux in discreet GPU mode on my laptop. One thing I did notice is that if I have VRR turned on I can get random amount of dropped frames in video decodes in the browser. Not sure if that is the driver, the browser or GNOME's implementation of VRR. If I turn VRR off frame drops on Youtube disappear.

  • Can we talk about how there's still no functional settings app for Nvidia on Wayland? Are we supposed to be waiting for the Nvidia App or what?

  • I don't know man ever since Nvidia locked down the drivers whenever I do a kernel update I have to mess around to get the drivers working again. And thats after the update defaults me to a broken kernel.

I'm not buying an Nvidia card for anything other than ML work ever again.

  • Are we good to upgrade from 23.10 to 24.04 yet? I haven’t received any notification 😢

  • I liked the ending but I think It might be very problematic if a beginner removes his entire system just because he tries it, you could at least censor part of the command, just a suggestion

  • 555 beta problems will get fixed for the 560 release version… which will be fine by the time they go default. I don't see the issue
